Another new MAX V2

Post by The Rigger »

Howdy!

Poking my head in to introduce... I'm Dave, somewhere in mid-Michigan unless I'm at work.

I bought this MAX v2 kit in December of '14, but I travel extensively for work - I'm a "roadie" for B'Way touring shows - and thus didn't have time to build it until now; I bunged up a knee moving my show from one city to another, and have been off on disability (knee surgery) since mid-January, so I finally had time to kill at home. Soooooooooo....

Anyway; it's been a hoot to build, and I've learned a few things here and there, building "Black Death"... The kit had the old melamine cheapskates, so I dropped some coin for the first-gen injection-moulded carriages when SMCNC first released them... Found out the hard way that upsizing the #4 washers to #6 to hold the cheapskate axles in place is a Good Idea - I was attempting a print of a fairly large piece (a replacemebt MAX base side panel) where the hot end swung from one end to the other very quickly, and the momentum of the hot end swinging that far that fast literally popped the Y-axis delta arm axle right off the IM carriage! Upsizing washers cured that for now; I'm debating upgrading the delta arms to the ball-joint type, later on down the road, but for now, this rig works fine...

Had a few hiccups with my first print, which I was able to solve with a little help from GeneB via email, regarding EEPROM settings that I screwed up. I found out that using v4 of the manual doesn't really do you that much good if you're still building v1.x of the actual kit. But between three different versions of the builder's guide and the newest version of the User Guide, I got BD up and running.

Mods: "Alien green" melamine edge paint, oversized washers on the axis carriage axle screws, quick-disconnect fasteners on all wiring going to the hot end & fans...

Here's a photo of BD at some mid-way point in her build-out:

Howdy to you also!
Thanks for the picture of your build, it looks great and I like your choice of colors.
I am also glad that after some great troubleshooting you have your printer working the way it should.
It's a real hoot building one of these but well worth it in my opinion.
Enjoy your Michigan coldness and snow and I will enjoy my NE Ohio cold and snow.
Happy Printing!

FYI, the user manual now covers both arm lengths. :)

I live in the Lansing area. Normally I don't see home very often, though.
