So I've had my v1 Max for a couple of years now. Had the initial rush of printing countless gazillions of the calibration cubes, torture tests and pyramids then kinda skipped the whole "printing pretty faff" thing and got down to making stuff that was useful.

All along, if it took longer than three or four hours to print my view has been:
1. Too long.
2. Design is flawed. Get clever and get it quicker.
3. Too long. Fix it and try again.

Finally though, it's caught up with me. The gnomon from a digital sundial (on thingiverse) that a mate has requested and it's his birthday on Saturday. Feck it. Not going to change the design because it's crazy and I know I'll break it. 30 hour print job, 300 or so layers of 0.1mm and the thing stretches wider on the print bed than anything I've done on it before.

Three hours, 10% of the way in and it's all going strong. Working from home tomorrow so I can babysit (for safety reasons I won't leave the house unattended whilst the printer is operating).

But I'll admit: I'm as nervous as hell...

It was always tough for me to find a good time to do a 30+hr print, I had lots to do when I first got my machine! I connect mine to Repetier host with remote access and have a camera on it but can never be too far from it. Now I'm in a big shop and I'm tempted to set the printer up in a big open space all by itself when I do long prints.

I have 6 fireplaces in my house, one of them is huge and i could burn 6 foot long logs in it. I normally burn 4 foot logs in it.I only use it a few times a year when i entertain and cook in it with 19th century methods. In this picture you see a 9lb leg of lamb cooking in front of 4 foot long logs. It is suspended from an 1830s clockwork bottle jack. My plan for long print jobs when i am away is to set the printer up inside this space.

That is a beautiful old fireplace and I am extremely jealous. The beauty of such a space comes from it's age and the way things were built back then.
Today it is do it quick and make a buck, not the older attitude of make it right and make it strong. Thanks for the great picture!

A nice place to print.

If I was to do this kind of thing regularly I'd be setting up an enclosure in the shed with a smoke alarm wired to a solenoid on an extinguisher as well as a thermal fuse on the heater block.

Thanks guys it is great fun to demonstrate old cooking methods in it as well this what the whole thing looks like at Xmas time. The musket is an early Springfield from the war of 1812 a family heirloom; and all the wrought iron implements are 18th and 19th century collected by my father when he was at university in the 1930s.The oven you see at the right, while a lot of Labor to use, works amazingly well with homemade bread.

OMG, that is too funny Windshadow. I can just see a big Rostock in there printing away. You MUST take photos when you do that.

I have to be honest about how nice it looks in those photos. I am an old fart that lives alone and things like vacuuming and dusting polishing the copper etc get done only when I have visitors coming. So, give me a few days notice Michael, and i will be happy to see you and give you the tour,

Did someone say something something bad at cleaning? My Max is a bit of a victim of the same phenomenon

Came out really, really well. Used Isaac (doodaddoes.com.au) primo black ABS and the stuff is lovely. Paranoid me decided this would be a good print to use a raft and ABS juice to prevent lifting and that worked out well. The large part ended up taking about 24h and went off without a hitch. One of the couplings gave me grief when the filament spool seized up and needed a couple of goes, the rest went really well. Those three parts took another 4h each or so. I did myself no favours timewise by specifying a 3mm perimeter, but the gnomon (the long bit) has so many intricate holes and bridges in it that there wasn't really a lot of room for infill anyway.

This one's a birthday present for a mate, I hope he appreciates it!

I've been wanting to print that, but until now I haven't had anything that can stand up to outdoors except my first spool of abs which is white. Pretty sure petg can handle outside, haven't looked that up yet.

PETG isn't inherently UV stable, but neither is ABS. I just clearcoat my ABS prints that need to retain strength in outdoor usage. So far so good.

I have seen that sun dial..... looks like a great print.

Regarding the risk of an unattended device, I have left my printer running for days unattended. Up until this past week, I've used the stock HotEnd which is likely to burn out if there was a runaway HotEnd. Now with the Diamond ceramic heater, I do worry more about a problem. Thus, in addition to using high quality electronics (thanks mhackney: (http://www.auberins.com/index.php?main_ ... cts_id=288) I was looking into an automatic extinguisher.

Although the following is pricy, better than the alternative (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ECJ ... _i=desktop).

Candid thoughts from others!!
