pla printing problem

Post by duvdev »

Hi there,
I was printing a big model - about 10 hours of print. The print wad with pla and the first 2 hours it looked good. I went out and when I came back I saw a big mess. It looked like the hot end jammed and the extruder motor slip on the pla filament until the filament snapped.
I was printing at 210 c so I thought it was too much so tried one more time at 190. The result is what you can see in the picture attached.

Can some one please advise how canice I solve this problem?

Thanks a lot

The only time I had this happen, one of my resistor wires was loose and the hotend was loosing power (heat) intermittently. This caused the filament to jam and get flatted by the feed gear. You may also make sure the filament is feeding smoothly in general. I doubt this is caused by too much heat at the extruder.

Also, are you using a PEEK fan? It's possible the filament went gooey and jammed up.

I had the same problem when I first started using PLA, up until that time I had used ABS exclusively.

I found the culprit to be the filament retraction and about 4mm was a magic number. When the retraction was larger (I was running 8mm to 10mm on ABS to control "drool") after a hour or so the Hot End Barrel heated up and the filament jammed even using a new replaced PEEK Fan (the original OEM fan failed quickly soon after installation). I would have to clear the nozzle with .018" wire and disassemble the extruder to removed ground up PLA from below the hobbed roller. After reducing the retract, the problem has gone away except for a particulat spool of material. I believe that it has a large percentage inert material filler in the PLA that does not melt.

My goto filament is GizmoDorks from Amazon Prime. Very consistant from spool to spool and no jamming issues at all.

YMMV
