3D Build in Vinh City Vietnam - with slideshow

Post by JohnStack »

Delivered one Orion and built a Max in Vinh City, Vietnam. Great experience, met with many challenges about tools, etc. I ended up leaving most of the tools I brought along.

Slideshow here (so glad someone took photos, I loved how these kids were so attentive:

Sorry for the lack of explanation, etc. It was a quick post until I had more time.

I was brought over by a friend who is the Director of IT at Blue Sky Academy http://www.bsa.edu.vn/ . They intend on using the 3D printers to market the school and to build a community of makers. Believe me, they're already makers - you go down any street and there is someone fixing a motorbike, car, building furniture, etc. This kind of brings them to the next level.

On the first day at the school, I unboxed the Orion, installed the filament, powered it on, and printed. Simple as can be. They were stunned.

For the Max, we had lots of fun. We brought in three crews of 10 - 11 year olds, asking them to remove the tape from the melamine and started asking them what they think they might be doing. Lots of guesses and then, in each crew, a brilliant kid said "3D Printer?", we unveiled the Orion and started printing.

We told them they were helping us build a much larger format printer. We built the Max - with various people coming in to help at various times; all the while, printing on the Orion and helping build familiarity with Repetier and Slicer. With all the different people, it took a bit longer to build. Once complete, the test didn't go well for the Hot end or the heated bed. Either thermistor or board problems. I ended up bring back the Rambo and left the heated bed there. One problem was solder and current. We had crappy solder and uneven current.

I've ordered new components and will be sending over a new setup to them so they can plug-in, calibrate and play.

I brought an extra hot end and thermistor. We simply blew them out for some reason. I tested for shorts before running - but then they shorted anyway - maybe due to man-handling the hot end before getting it put in.

I left well-appreciated but a little upset with myself that I didn't deliver a 100% result. I'm glad I recommended having the Orion as a just in case. That worked out well. It happens!!!

If you ever have a week or ten days, I strongly recommend going to Vietnam. They're a fascinating people, generous to a fault, and the food is absolutely brilliant. A funny thing: I came back and after a couple of days, had a burger. I got really sick from having it. After having fresh food (and no hamburgers or pizza), I think I was pretty healthy.

One thing I plan on doing is to buy a 100 cc Honda motorbike in Saigon for $350 and riding it up to Hanoi, a 1,500 KM trip. You sell the bike up there for about the same. Inexpensive hotels are less than $50 a night the entire way up. Food per day is about $20. If you're interested in doing this, I have some new friends who can get you started in HCMC (Saigon).
