November Print Challenge

Post by johnoly99 »

Ok all you daredevils of 3D printing out there! Here's one for you.

We challenge you to print this object full size, no scaling allowed, no altercations either, and post your results here. Once it's done, we'll have a poll for the best looking print, and the winner will receive a couple KG's of filament and some SeeMeSchwag from the shop. Here's the only rules:

Any material counts, ABS PLA etc...
Must be printed full scale (~150mm tall)
NO support material
NO modifying the stl file :D
You must post your settings and material used in this thread
You must post a photo of the completed print ON your machine before removing it from the print surface
You must have fun trying to get it to make it all the way to the top :D

The STL file is attached below, I'd post a pic, but it's funner to be a surprise !!!

Can we print a brim or raft? I'd like to be able to remove it and keep it as a print when finished... Without it, it's just a bunch of single pieces

I'll go ahead and claim the filament now... haha

Even with the brim, 2 of the towers tipped over during the print, but somehow managed to keep printing. I'd bet this can't be replicated...

well not as easy as it looks i have a pile of 8 tube 4 of which are 1 1/2" tall and other 4 were only 3/4" from finishing the print when i'm guessing cold draft effected back corner of the machine, it sits in corner of my office at far wall where draft from stairs swirl air current. the piece just went tink and fell over without being touched. I will be making some type of skirt to prevent air flow when printing,.
But as they say third times a charm and it is busy now trying again this time not live like last 2 attempts

well 3rd time wasn't a charm it 2 fell over at 4min left in the print, not sure what issue is i think it is the jerkiness of slcr it swings all the way around in full circle to go to each post and i see very slight jerk ?? how do i stop that issue if that wasnt their then maybe will finish. on kisslcr i cant figure out how to make starting layer thicker so it sticks to bed it was only printing single layer and that is why it kept popping off not enough stick. so ??? how do i tell kisslcr to add more than 1 layer on begging or is that considered changing the print.

Ian, it helps to be more specific with troubleshooting questions.

What material are you using?
What are your print/slice settings? Temps? Cooling fans?
What are you printing on? Glass? Glue? Hairspray? PET or Kapton? Heated bed?

Wildideas, have you seen any issues with the coloring affecting layer sticking? And what kind of marker are you using?

Decided to put all my printers to the test.

First up, the Orion.
2013-11-26 21.45.57.jpg
I used a newer soft PLA from Printed Solid. It is a bit expensive but I like it a lot. I am still having issues printed standard PLA on my Orion but this soft PLA worked without issue.
Used Garnier Fructis extreme hold on the build plate (not heated)
.2 layer, one perimeter, no infill.
I made the mistake (on all 3) of not printing as a vase and the top fill nearly took down the print at the last minute, but it held.

Next up the "Miracle Max" (name to be explained in another post)
2013-11-26 21.55.47.jpg
Ultimachine white PLA
.2 layer, one perimeter, no infill, bed 60C, with Garnier Fructis
Couldn't be happier with this print. I did my first print ever on this machine on Saturday and on Tuesday to put this out was beyond expectations. Had the same issue as the Orion with nearly knocking the print off on the roof at the end.

Finally, just for sake of comparison and not an official entry, on my "Printer that must not be named"
2013-11-26 21.00.32.jpg
Ultimachine brown pla, same stuff I used for my dragon clock http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:184736
.2 layer, one perimeter, no infill, bed 60C, with Garnier Fructis

As the testament to the holding power on the Garnier Fructis I took this photo the next morning.

Very nice prints. I did not see the "soft" pla on Printed Solid. But their prices don't seem to bad.

It is their colorfabb pla/pha filament. "soft" may be a bit generous to describe it, it is a bit more flexible than just straight pla.

And thank you for not naming that machine called MAKERBOT. You forgot to cover the nameplate.
We just hope the picture does not give us a virus or something. :)
