The Original Rostock
The Original Rostock
Hi Fellow Printers,
I've been moving around quite a bit for the last year and finally settled down in Los Angeles. Now I have some time on my hands to finish off this build for the original Rostock via indiegogo campaign.
Been poking around the forums and realized how much Rostock has advanced since then. I will be using this post to keep track of my build.
Also was wondering if any printmasters would give me a wish list of upgrades they couldn't live without. It seems that almost everything could be upgraded now, but if there was something you could have changed when building the original what would it be?
Thanks and good printing,
Gabe!

Re: The Original Rostock
Hi! Looking forward to your build and pictures.
The upgrades I would do first is go with the Xnaron Magnetic Arms.
Get rid of the Steves Extruder and go with the direct drive extruder.
Get the latest version of the Hot End
The manual has changed a lot since the Indiegogo campaign make sure you
get the latest one from the documentation sub-forum.

Re: The Original Rostock
Trick Laser Carbon Arms are worlds better than the stock delta arms - and will save you at least 3-4 hours on the initial build if you order them now.
Skip the new SeeMe Extruder and just get the E3D all metal end. The new SeeMe hot end will run you $60 + shipping. The E3D is about $100, but lets you print any material, is nearly impossible to jam, and gives awesome retract performance.

Re: The Original Rostock
I'd recommend getting a set of the updated arms from SeeMeCNC - they're really good. A LOT cheaper too.
I'd also recommend getting a 40W heater cartridge and the new nozzle that SeeMeCNC offers. That's the only part of the hot end that's changed from the original design.
Onyx heated bed for sure.

Re: The Original Rostock
Thanks for all the good tips, I will start shopping around for these upgrades now. Seems like I would have to build the Xnaron Magnetic Arms and order an e3d from the UK. Guess this will put this on hold for a bit until the parts come in. Maybe I'll ask around see if seemecnc has anything laying around they can sell me before ordering.
Cheers

Re: The Original Rostock
Magnetic arms are worthy of the time and effort to make, but kinda need a printer already working for their construction and aren't good for your sanity when initially setting up your first delta build.
It really is a favor to yourself to get at the very least the new arms from SeeMeCNC like Geneb suggested. Then again maybe you're into a little suffering. That's ok, we'll welcome you to the sand-your-delta-arms-and-fret-about-it-endlessly club if you care to join, but you would likely be better off without that experience.

Re: The Original Rostock
I'm trying to find the best balance of cost and time. So probably have to pass on the Trick arms, they seem like a future upgrade for sure at $100. The new Rostock arms seems highly touted at $16. So probably going to just order a new nozzle and 40w heater cartridge as Gene has suggested as well.
What's the difference between the stock extruder and the ez or a direct drive? Are they about the same?

Re: The Original Rostock
The EZStruder is a lot easier to work with and you can mount it to the top of the machine instead of hanging it off the side like the Steve's Extruder.

Re: The Original Rostock
Ok after removing all the arms and trying to sand down the u joints on both the carriage and effector, i realized my time would be better spent doing anything else, so I decided to just drop the extra dough and go with the trick arms. Hope they get here soon. About to order some stuff from seemecnc but wanted to get a clarification.
Am I reading correctly from Cope that if I get the E3D I don't need an ez extruder? So just stick with the Steve extruder? I would much rather spend the extra on the Onyx, looks much bigger and cooler.

Re: The Original Rostock
The E3D is a hot end and the EZStruder and Steve's Extruder are extruder drive motors and assemblies. Two TOTALLY different things.

Re: The Original Rostock
Ah Ok thanks for that distinction, I just thought the E3D had it's own extrusion mechanism. Is the new eztruder considered a direct drive extruder?
Re: The Original Rostock
Awesome thanks, I just ordered the onyx and ez with new nozzle, can't wait to get those and finish up this build. I've been seeing some pictures of the new machines, they look awesome with that tall black body. Makes me wish I waited.

Re: The Original Rostock
If you check my signature... You can see how to DIY basically the same arms as Trick Laser (carbon fiber tube with ball rod ends) for ~$40. I've been using them for quite a while. Actually about 5 minutes away from finishing a 20 hour print with LOTS of support that printed amazing! I can't comment on the new seemecnc arms, I had the ones prior to the current set that required sanding, more sanding, then throwing your head into the table trying to figure out why infills weren't working right, LOL

Re: The Original Rostock
Darn,
Wish I saw your post earlier. I just received the trick arms and care package from seemecnc with eztruder and onyx board today. Going to see if I can finish up this build asap so we can start printing.

Re: The Original Rostock
Just realized the first edition rostock max machines don't have the predrilled holes for the onyx upgrade. Does this mean I have to pull everything apart and drill those holes? Dang thought i was almost there.
Re: The Original Rostock
@gabechewy When I designed the RMAX, I put holes in there for the Onyx HB. ALL Rostock MAX have the six holes for mounting the heated bed.

Re: The Original Rostock
Depending on which version of the manual you're looking at, it used to mention something about the HB holes being marked (I think with a letter I, or something like that).
Don't worry about that part, just look at which 6 holes line up with your snowflake and use those.

Re: The Original Rostock
Yeah you want the Onyx! Much bigger print area than that original bed and if you have the space for it then might as well take advantage of it right?!
