Hello from Delaware

Post by DavidF »

Just ordered my Rostock max a couple days ago and expecting its delivery tomorrow.
I did a lot of looking and shopping before making my decision. What cinched it for me was seeing what the berry bot could do and what the members of this forum have done with thier printers.
A little about me, I'm 42 and enjoy building and making things. Have a fair amount of tools and never back down from a challenge. I have a good eye for the mechanics of things, but not so hot with electronics or computers so hopefully you can help me out there. I bought this printer in hopes to be able to build my rov design that I have kept on the back burner due to the excessive cost of materials to build it. Being able to print out the parts and then investment cast them should do the trick to get this project back on the rails. So hello everybody!

Hello DavidF!
Welcome to the Forum. You purchased what we all believe to be the best printer available and you are
correct, there are many modifications available including the magnetic arms. Be sure to download the
latest build guide which is available here: http://www.geneb.org/rostock-max/Rostoc ... -Guide.pdf
You can create your own build thread under the Build Zone Topic. We always like pictures with the dialog.
We have a very diverse membership on the forum and someone will always respond to your questions.
Have a great build!

I downloaded the manual a week ago and have read it a few times all ready. Also ordered the E3D hot end, magnets, carbon fiber rods, and have been trying to resistance weld some studs to the 3/8" bearings the past couple days. LOL

Just a quick FYI, _always_ check the date on the assembly manual thread in the Official Docs forum. As errors are found and corrected, I update the manual and then tweak the date listed in the subject line of the doc thread. :)

If you can TiG weld try that for the ball-ends. I used 18/8 screws, a 1/16" tunsten ground to as fine of a point as I could get, and I think (it's been a few weeks so I can't remember exactly) the max current was set for 25 amps. Hit it quick and full for a fusion weld - no filler.

I put three small welds ~120 degrees apart.

I'm working on getting some close-up photos for the Google Groups Deltabot forum, but I haven't yet got out my extension tubes for a macro shot.

Good luck!

I can tig weld, but my concern with the tig welding approach is getting the stud on perfectly straight. I made up a little jig to hold the ball while the stud is resistance welded into place but having an issue with too much pressure blowing the sides of the Allen headed screw out. I think its just a matter of using a different type of bolt. But if it keeps failing then ill just tig them on. I was looking for a way to mass produce, that's why I'm more for the resistance welding...

I agree about mass production if that's your interest. I'd bed it's the hex that's throwing off the resistance weld, though I have little experience with that process.

I used a pair of vise grips with just a little more pressure than needed to keep the assembly from falling out of the grips. Get-in, get-out, fast welds. For small things like this I always extend my post-flow time and use the gas to help cool things a bit.

For reference, I have been running infills above 130 mm/s with jerk settings at 70 mm/s^2/s and accelerations at 4000 mm/s^2. When I printed the rod-ends, I used a cotton rag dipped in a bit of acetone to smooth the cups, and have coated them with a dab of white lithium grease for operation. Smooth as...well, pick your colloquialism. Point is, I didn't put much effort into it and things are amazing.

I have recently been wanting to measure the run-out on one of the ball-ends, though...I'll be sure to post the results if I do.

Yea, im probably going over kill. Thing is I see the guys at seemecnc have listened to people and made changes to the printer to correct issues that have poped up. That kind of understanding, care, and dedication is something that I thought was lost in modern society. Its good to know that its still around!! Mag arms would be a big advancement (i think) but plan on building the printer in its stock form to weigh things out.
I have a small machine shop at home, so I will be machining my parts rather than printing them. Just need to work out some things first, lol like having the printer up and running and having some idea of how to use it lol.

Sorry, I had to :) welcome to the forum! Sounds like you've got quite the home shop. It'll be interesting to hear your thoughts as you get things up and running, being that you have a mechanical background and all.

Looks nice. If you were to spin one up with a dial indicator on it, how true would it run?

I haven't done that yet because my shop is a bit of a mess due to it being a storage area while the basement is redone after some water damage. Hopefully within the next couple of weeks I'll actually be able to get to my mill at which point I want to chuck one of these in my precision chuck and measure the run-out. I'll be sure to update when that happens.

If you ever get the time and decide to offer your welded solution for sale please let me know.
I read your posts on the deltabot forum and I know that your time is very limited. You could
easily get 2 or 3 dollars per welded ball.

I know what thats like!! just had to deal with it a few weeks ago. Shop all cleaned up but I cant find my 1/4" r8 collet since the big clean up.
Im rethinking the welding thing, need to come up with an easier solution.....Still up in the air at the moment
