Unshrouded LCD header pins

Post by Xavier »

I got my smartcontroller to Rambo adapter kit yesterday... The 2 by 5 header pins for the LCD cables are Unshrouded instead of shrouded like the images show. If I install them it will be possible to plug the LCD cables in upside down or backwards. I know plugging the wrong cable into the wrong plug causes no permanent harm. What about plugging a cable in upside down? My shop is far from foolproof! Shrouded headers at least eliminate one source of error.

Dangerous?

You bought these from Seemecnc.com? Would it be possible to take a picture of these and post it here?
I have never heard of an unshrouded 2x5 female connector and I would like to see what you were sent.

Yes from seemecnc. They are male header pins, not female. Hopefully the picture worked. Definitely not shrouded as the ordering images show. Will they work anyway? No danger to Rambo or LCD?

Mine are shrouded and I don't know what happens if you plug them in backwards. It looks like at least you can align the key on the ribbon connectors with the marking for the key on the PC Board. Thats how I figured out how to align the shrouded connector when soldering it.

I have left them an email about this but they are one of their Maker Faire weekends and I may not get a response until Monday.
Although I doubt that there is a any danger involved, your point is well taken. Eliminating the shrouds also eliminates the keying
that ensures you cannot plug in the cables upside down. I have no idea why they did away with the shrouds unless their supplier
raised they prices and Seemecnc is trying not to raise the price of the kit. You already know what your choices are and none of
them are good. I found a pack of 10 of the shrouded connectors on Ebay for $5 free shipping at http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-pcs-609-1027 ... 1c31e9ef7f
This is what I would do but I would not be too happy about having to do it. It's amazing what Companies will do to save a buck.

That's how mine was and that's what is shown in Geneb's V2 guide as well.

I thought it was odd too.

I had these same un-shrouded pins. I emailed John and he said it's a supplier issue. They had run out of shrouded ones. I used these and my LCD works fine. Just follow geneb's guide for plugging things in. Be careful when opening the electronics bay door though. I did pull my adapter loose during my build.
