My FIRST(/2nd) Printer!

Post by m4r1n5 »

Hello all,

I'm anxiously waiting for my Rostock Max to be shipped! The title is somewhat coded, but I had looked at buying a printer for about 5months. After exhausted looking, I bought a Prusa i3 that was 90% assembled without a power supply. Not knowing a whole lot when it comes to the workings of a 3d printer, I found it difficult not only to find schematics for my China made power supply but I had a hard time figuring out how to get my pc to recognize it. Needless to say its been a rough 2 weeks (on and off) just to finally get my computer to move the nozzle!

THEN I find this site. My end goal was to build me a ROSTOCK MAX i saw on Thingiverse, but seeing this one, I felt I should go for it and learn with this instead of the Prusa. I see so much more help on this forum for the Rostock than any other forum for other orinters, ive looked at. I'm really excited.

hmm the power supply, doesn't have anything to do with the pc.. maybe your confusing what the power supply is used for in the 3d printer. It is used for powering the printers electronics. Pc doesn't need to recognize it.

What i meant by that comment was I couldn't figure out how to connect the power or the board to it. there were no schematics to help. As far as the pc, Between figuring out "COM1", "USB1", and a host of software everyone recommends is "the best", PLUS drivers it was hard to figure all that out with no real support for that particular printer or board. Ive seen more questions answered here than any other forum ive been to.

As a matter of fact I have gone through your thread of building a second printer and found it more helpful than anything ive seen outside of this forum! BIG props to your contribution and I will be looking at it constantly while I build mine. :D

the Singuinololu 1.3a board, but they added a 4pin power connecter to it and theres no schematics I saw that helped me. THEN theres the drivers and using the Arduino program. MAN was I confused. I wasnt until I used Repetier that I got the nozzle moving.

I was alson wondering.... I found a youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWFl-pdaV0s) blasting the craftmanship of the printer. It's only 1 person and I normally wouldn't put TOO much stock in it, but his purchase was within the last 30days, which means I'm getting the same product. Unless theres been upgrades to the issues he's pointed out, is his complaints somewhat normal (as in others have seen the same issues, just not all at once/ in one printer) or abnormal?

you going to have to learn arduino no matter what printer you have, not necessarily program it but just operate the basic functions.

its a diy kit, and the fact he doesn't let anyone post any comments on it. just shows he trying to demean the product. i had issues with mine also but they took care me. got me the parts i Needed. so you need see both side of the issue. Which he doesn't let you see..search this forum you'll see this topic has been discussed to death..

m4r1n5, the video is a smear job and nothing else. He got in way over his head and is doing everything possible to blame the machine and not his Fischer-Price level of technical ability. He thinks he's far more qualified than he actually is.

For example, he states, "the bearing covers aren't Delrin, they're actually acetal." (paraphrased)
The first sentence in the Wikipedia entry from Delrin begins, "Polyoxymethylene (POM), also known as acetal..."

I would hazard a guess that there's probably north of 500 Rostock MAX machines out in the wild by now. If the machine was truly as bad as he claims, you'd see a LOT of discussion about it, especially at $999 a pop for the kits.

BTW, avoid the first manual like the plague. :) It covers the Indiegogo version of the kit and doesn't reflect the current production parts that are now shipping. The 2nd edition isn't yet complete, but it will get you through the complete construction of the machine. I started working on the calibration and setup sections yesterday, so it won't be long before it's complete.

Thank you! I bought mine yesterday and its scheduled to ship June 6, so Ill have time to read and reread the manuals to get more familiar. As well as look through the forums and see the diff tricks to get me through.

I have tried to download the manual from Github but its "failing" is it my end or is there another link I can get it from?
