Eclectic projects

Post by Xenocrates »

Around here we've been working on more than a few projects, many of which are either complete, or nearing completion. So I figured I might as well give others a chance to see some of what we've been doing here, and how chaotic it is. Don't expect too much professionalism, or a coherent set of projects. Each project is in a spoiler so you can choose to skip what you're not interested in. Go ahead and request additional pictures/info on any of them if you like it or want to know more.

Firstly, Cutoff saw and lumber storage bench
Spoiler:
We built this to accommodate a nice Bosch cutoff saw, and to give us another working surface in the shop, as well as reclaim some amount of floor space from the accumulation of lumber and tools. The table top got a pair of T-tracks in it to allow us to attach fixtures, and the back is aligned with the fence. The table top will eventually be sanded and waxed smooth. The whole thing is on casters, and we have about 2 trees worth of 12 foot long hardwood boards in the bottom shelf, as well as a good amount of random 2X for other projects. On the list of things to do are a dust collection adapter for the saw, and hardboard fronts for the areas to the side of the saw, as well as enclosing the back of the saw, and shelves in the open space.

Next, 3D printed roses,
Spoiler:
I made these for my SO for Christmas, as it's been a bit of a running joke that I keep giving her flowers and they keep dying before she got them home. So I made some that wouldn't die on her. 3D printed in black ABS, then airbrushed to get the proper color. A piece of 1MM brass pinning rod was inset into the base, then wrapped with leaves added so that it would look reasonable. Only have one picture really, since I avoided taking any in process so she wouldn't find them and spoil the surprise.

Beyond that, we have laser cut wargaming terrain.
Spoiler:
Four designs, don't have good shots of individual ones yet. All of them laser cut from 1/8 baltic birch. We'll be making the files available eventually, but cleaning them up for others is taking some time (we based them loosely off another design, and the original creator doesn't want us to post them as is, so we are re-designing the webbing detail on the containers). Currently we're painting them. There are more than 60 of each design (over 100 of the Ping-Pong ball based ones). There are also hexagonal prism shaped small containers. More pictures later if people are interested.

3D printed fantasy terrain
Spoiler:
Currently testing the files from the Printable Scenery Winterdale kickstarter. So far, pretty good. Not allowed to give away the STL's, since they sell them. Some small glitches, but not too bad, really. Most of the problems are because I haven't tuned the new roll yet.

Also in the works, but largely without pictures here, because I don't have them right now:

Rambo controlled heated bed.
Spoiler:
Firmware now compiles (haven't had time to test it on the printer yet though). Brackets were designed and printed to hold the relay to the side of the printer. Those brackets can be found on Repables. http://repables.com/r/718/ for those with the same relay (another bit of Kickstarter stuff we had around for no real reason) New heater bulb is on the way which is both smaller and lower power as the old one was way overkill (see the Mods and upgrades section for details). I'm holding off on mounting anything until I have the heater in hand, so I can make sure it all works. Going to use an E3D heater block+thermistor for my temp reading for now, as I no longer use the thermistor based ones, and don't currently have time to make a better reader.
Repables upload for the Raymond style chamber:

Submarine battleship for Junk-Punk Orks (WH40K)
Spoiler:
We started with a Kilo-class diesel electric submarine RC kit, and then strapped on a pair of gundecks. We're working on bulking out the hull, but there are problems with adhering stuff to the hull, as it will flake off layers of whatever plastic it is. Far from complete. We'll be printing a deckhouse and some turrets for it soon, which will then be further detailed (we 'borrowed' the meshes for the turrets from an online game called World of Warships) with plasticard and resin parts. Eventually it will the the centerpiece of a Marine Railway table.
Hopefully you folks don't mind my sorta rambling omnibus post, and that you like at least a bit of what we're doing.
