.AMF Files

Post by Robaire »

Now that SolidWorks has added more support for 3D printers and saving to an .AMF file I've been trying to get Repetier to load the file. However it never loads the model properly, always extremely small. You can barely see it on the print bed. Does anyone have any advice or know how to get AMF files loading properly.

I'm not familiar with Solidworks/.AMF specifically, but it sounds like it is being exported with different units than Repetier-Hose is trying to import them. Usually units should be in millimeters before importing to 3D printer software. If Solidworks properties has the model in meters, then it will be 1000 times smaller when imported to Repetier-Host.

Ah thanks. I'll look into it, I normally use SolidWorks with imperial units as I am American.

You might be American (most of us are), but 1) 99.9% of the rest of the world uses metric and 2) 100% of the 3d printers out there (with possible exceptions in Stratasys and 3D Systems lines) use metric natively. As far as I know, ALL the slicing packages out there only grok metric. You'll be better off in the long run if you change your UoM to millimeters in SolidWorks. :)

To be fair, none of that information tells you how much energy it takes to boil a metric unit of water either. It only tells you how much energy it takes to bring it to the boiling point. Enthalpy of vaporization is a different matter.
