Derc Tora's MAX V2 and upgrades

Post by DercTora »

I bought a rostock max v2 back in September of last year with the intent of diving head first into 3d printing and learning autoCAD before Christmas was over. Well, best laid plans
It was only today that I finally finished assembly and printed the PEEK fan(it is printing as I am typing this all out).

I lurked the forums for a good 2 months before I bought the printer the make sure it was what I wanted. At the same time bookmarking any modification or upgrade threads.
The number one upgrade recommended was the astrosyn vibration dampers for the motors, so I ordered that at the same time as the printer.
Next up was the arms. There where two options for the arms and joints, carbon fiber or aluminum arms with magnets or ball rod ends joints. I went with magnets and carbon fiber. I'll need to print some stuff before I upgrade the arms for a good comparison point.
The E3D-v6 was also a must have as well. I'll get to that one after the arms are fully tested
The rest are minor upgrades and with be talked about when I post info on them

I took pictures as I was building it, so I guess I could post that.

Its a box

Stuff is in that box

I was almost disappointed there was no styrofoam peanuts until I got to the electronic box :D

Prep for Painting

Painted - no more burnt wood smell.

Touched up and tape removed - some side notes:
Test coat some of the scrap to get a good idea of what it will look like before committing the time and effort to painting. Grab some primer, it just soaks in that paint. Touch up will be needed, so make sure you have extra paint in a open container to brush on missed spots The tape with not cover some spots and with take off paint in others. It was almost not worth painting after all the time and effort, almost. Removing the tape after painting will suck even more.

Modding the PSU

I liked what Hans did to his PSU, so I did the same. Plus some.

I work in a machine shop, I have access to every tap known to man. :D

I know a friend who owns a wood carver, so cut outs for melamine are supper easy for me.

I am a huge fanboy of fractal(my main computer is a DEFINE R4 Arctic White)
Also didnt notice the wire was at the wrong side :|

Towers and wires construction - I plan on upgrading to hall effect switch, so I ran 9 wires in the X tower instead of the 6. Did not have nearly as much a problem with X tower as I did with the hot end power tower. That was not fun :(

I did not a bad job with the heated bed, until I pluged it in a found i wired the Led for backwards :|

I fixed it

Forgot to put a towel on the bed at some point and F'n scratched the bed. Was a little worried it would not work. I am glad it does.

Controller installed - side note: it was a pain in the back side to jam that sucker in there. the fan upgrade made me do some creative thinking. Had to trim the support pegs and take out the fuse and still was a fight to get it in place.

Getting really close to finishing

I cutout the side covers the same time I did the controller mounting plate

My battle station is ready.

The PEEK fan finished partway through this post and I have to say WOW!
This, this is the reason why I wanted to get into 3d printing. To have the ability to just.. make things.
I am 110% impressed with the quality of my first print, and I know(from the countless post I have read) more printing experience will only improve the quality.
I have to get ready for work right now, so i'll have to post the results tomorrow.

A shout out to the guys at seemecnc for making such an awesome product and backing it with continual support in and out of forums. There was an issue with the boarder crossing (I shipped it to a american address near Vancouver for self pick up into Canada) I had to get customs to phone you guys to verify what it was. They did and there was no problems. :D
I also wanted to give a huge thanks to every one that has contributed any thing to the forums. I would never have chosen seemecnc if it did not have such an amazing community to back it up. There was a few times I got stuck and did a quick search to immediately fine a solution or workaround. Awesome.

Thanks Tincho :D

As promised, here are my first print results.
Settings - Hot end:228 Bed:80 Density:0.2 Layer height:0.25
I used UHU stic for bed adheasion.
The hot end looked like it was having a problem extruding that first layer; I was about to abort and start to trouble shooting, then it starts kicking out that plastic like a hot damn and every thing was fine.

First up is pre removal.
1 - What would cause the print to stick out like that?
2 - Is that first layer spread ok?

I love that layering; the over hang... not so much

A few little nubs here or there.

Infill looks like its hitting most(if not all) of the perimeter, so that is nice.

All in all. Solid first print if I do say so my self :D

Looks great! Don't worry much about the overhang, that model is notorious for printing that edge in mid air.

From what I've been reading around here, for a first print, that's fantastic! Thank you for sharing your build!
