Greetings! from New Orleans, LA!

Post by cyber.shifter »

Hello everyone! My name is Nathan, and I'm a tinkerer. :-P I'm getting started in 3D printing with a Rostock Max V2, and I noticed the community seemed to be pretty large and knowledgeable, so I thought I would introduce myself. I have done some work with a friend of mine's 3D printer, and plenty of electronics work, as well as coding. This will be the first time I have my own printer though, and after seeing the Rostock in 3D Hub's review, I decided to give it a shot. That's about it I guess, hopefully I can add to the community as well and have fun at the same time!

Hi Nathan and welcome to the Forum!
We will appreciate you becoming an active member of the community asking questions as needed and helping others who have questions.
During your build we would like to see a picture or two (or 100's) :D .
Have a great build and if you need us for anything we are just a message away.
Happy Printing!

Thanks! I will definitely do a build thread. Is there a thread that outlines the additional items I need to buy with the kit? I saw someone mention the heat tape, and also the adhesive for the hot end. I want to get the kit ordered as well as the other stuff so it comes in all at the same time.

The assembly manual lists all the things needed to complete the kit, including the things you need to purchase. Be sure you have the correct manual which is at http://download.seemecnc.com/rostockmax ... dition.pdf
I would also get one of the 12V 24 Watt ceramic cartridges from Ebay to replace the resistors in the hotend.
A pair of "nano fuses" are used on the Rambo Card and I would purchase at least four of these so that you have some spares. See this link: http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php ... Littlefuse

Are you recommending that I purchase additional resistors? Or are you recommending that I get a different sort of element from the one that comes in the kit? Oh, and I already have a bunch of those resistors at home. I work on emergency equipment in civil service vehicles and we use them all the time. Thanks for the heads up though, I'll have to make sure I grab some from the shop next time I'm there. :-)

It's not necessary to modify your kit in anyway to get started. I recommend modifications later after the stock build. Otherwise you (and the guys here at customer support) may be trying to figure out more questions than needed in a new build. It's really cool there's so may mods for our printers. Just keep in mind that if you modify from the beginning, it'll likely be more difficult to troubleshoot problems you might have.

All we recommend and all you need to assemble our kit is a tube of Hi-Temp RTV from the autoparts store and a $20 volt meter with temperature probe from Wally World. That's it.

If care is taken to pack the stock heating resistors with hi-temp RTV, you should have a good experience. I still choose the same power resistors because they're flame proof (not just resistant). Although it's RTV, it does conduct and hold up to the task. If there are air pockets during assembly, then heat transfer will not be as good and the resistors will not last very long.

DO NOT wrap the heat resistors in aluminum foil if you read about this anywhere. This does more harm than good. Just pack with hi-temp RTV. It is normal for some temporary smoking of a new hot end build. Take care the leads are not shorted on the hot end block. If one resistor gets all the current, it'll be burnt out in no time. Monitor the hot end with temp probe on brass nozzle during initial heating. This will keep you from having any kind of melt down. You should get 6 months to a year or more from your hot end. After that, there's no need to keep checking it.

The heater cartridges are nice, and they do last longer, heat up faster, etc., but remember that they are a fire hazard. This is the only reason I still do not use them or recommend using them.

Duly noted. Since the machine may be running without supervision a good bit of the time, I will abstain from using those heating elements for the moment. Thanks for the advice! My kit comes in on Friday, so you should see a build thread coming soon! :-)
