PEEK Fan not running as advertised?

Post by NDT_RV4 »

So i haven't had a lot of time for the printer until recently and just started to finally understand the goals behind calibrating and how it works, so i went ahead and began installation of the PEEK fan. After installation, i ran it. The planning says that the fan should turn on and off automatically whenever the hot end passes 50C. Well it did not turn on at that point so i went ahead and turned it on in Matter Control. Decided i was ok with that and that i would reprogram the PID later.

Now to today, i get home eager to continue this project and start the PID autotune command. Once again the fan doesnt turn on past 50C, so i go into the controls page and try and switch it on and it doesnt turn on at all, all the way through the tuning.

So i'm pretty dang sure i did SOMETHING wrong here. Does anyone have any pointers?

Thanks in advance!

From the best of my recollection, the fan control in MatterControl is for the Layer Fan, not the Peek fan. If you were able to control it with that slider, then you have the Peak fan wired to the wrong pair of wires (the layer fan) and that would explain why it doesn't turn on when you turn on the hot end. My peak fan turns on as soon as you turn on the hot end and auto shuts off when the temp drops to 50C.

So i opened here up and pulled the Rambo out to verify that it's wired correctly and I have the wires labeled PEEK going to HEAT 1 just as the planning states.

In the planning for installing the fan itself, it says to use the knotted wires. That was done as well....

How carefully did you make sure tugging on the PEEK-labeled wires pulled the knotted wires towards the tower? All that knotting and labeling funny-business just comes down to making sure you've identified the same pair of wires at the top and the bottom. I probably double-checked which wires were which a dozen times after I ran the wires, since they can't be run after identification.

Another vote for wrong wires. A manually-operated hot-end fan would be highly unusual and the instructions ask you to use the MC fan control during checkout of the layer fan.

Just so we're on the same page - you ought to have two fans on your effector platform. One of them is the peek fan, the other is the layer fan. Are you positive you know which is which?

my preference is to just run 12v from the PSU to peek fan so it is for sure ALWAYS on, which it should be.

Yup. I just cut off the fan and checked all continuities.... I transposed my black wires... i even had them taped and labelled. :x :(

A quick google finds anything!

Tl;Dr - I transposed ground wires. I shouldn't build 3D Printers while sleep deprived... Thanks everyone!

Glad you got it sorted! The RAMBo board uses a common positive instead of a common ground. That's why flipping the black wires bit you. I have NO clue why they're not using a common ground plane.

That URL I posted above has been pinned in a browser tab for a couple of years - it's been so long that I've forgotten WHY I needed to pin it. :D
