The fitting you're after on the rods should be loose to the point where their own weight will make them drop to the vertical, but NOT so much as you've got any side-to-side play, correct?

That is what I did, and make sure there are no tight spots. In my case it was a tight spot from the scratches and grit. I used 400 grit sandpaper on a 1/8" aluminum block so it was nice and stiff. It took a surprising amount of sanding - which is good since it makes it more difficult to over do it and get too much play!

As I've said before, Barnett and spent literally hours on sanding the u-joints. We would sand, put it all together, test, take apart and resand, put back together, test, take apart resand, etc....
Just make sure you keep track of which sides you are sanding. We easily lost track of which side was which in-between the assemble and disassemble.....probably the reason it took us so long. The plus side is our prints have looked very good since day one..?!?!?
