Newbie in the Motorcity

Post by Proto »

Hello all

I have to admit that I have not ordered my Rostock Max yet, but I am sure that it is the printer for me.

I was going back and forth between Rostock Max and the Ultibots Kossel 250 V-Slot. But between the term (BETA) in Ultibots description, and the Max's bigger build volume, made my decision easier.

Now for the tough question... New? or Used?

I know there are a couple of used Maxs on this forum. And I found about a half a dozen on Craigslist within 1000 of me (I know, that's a bit far). The closest one is a V1 being sold for $1400 with "some extra parts and almost everything for a dual hot end". The cheapest one is also a V1 in Delaware for $500 (with a broken timing belt)

So should I Care and Nurture it from the kit form? Or should I rescue a previously loved one, and give it a good home?

ps. did I mention that I have Zero experience soldering

Welcome to the forum!
If you are asking for opinions, I would purchase the kit.
You will then have control how it is built and have the satisfaction of doing it yourself.
If you buy one that is already built and can never get it to print right you will always blame the build done by someone else.
As far as soldering, it is a skill that is easily picked up, you just need to practice for 30 minutes. Perhaps by a small kit
from Jameco or others that requires soldering and taking your time, solder the kit being careful not to bridge connections.

I have to admit that cambo3d's Max V1 listed in the SeeMe's List Section is very tempting. It seems like a good machine built by a skilled individual. I have to admit that his build post got a bit confusing for me when he started the second machine. which machine was seeing the love. One? The Other? Both? neither? Now if he would respond to my PM... (hint, hint, hint)

The $500 Max V1 on the Delaware Craigslist, though tempting, is to/too/tutu far from Detroit to be viable in my opinion. I do not feel comfortable enough doing long distance transactions on Craigslist. Simply, if I can save some money on the initial purchase then I have more money for materials and upgrades. :D

BUT... building one from the ground up would be an invaluable skill to have. Making troubleshooting easier (I hope).

Treat Cambo's machine with care, he has a lot of hours invested in that machine.
He is not on the board much anymore but he was one of our best posters.
Hopefully we will see him on the board more often.

OK, I'm getting excited! To tell the truth, I've been excited since I transferred the money to Cambo

I've downloaded a version of MatterControl and Cura to try out various slicers. So far I like Cura better in some ways and MatterControl in others.

In Cura, you can move the build platform with the arrow keys, making it easier to manually arrange the parts on the bed. It gives you the overall dimensions for the printed part which makes it easy to fix scaling issues. And Cura seem a bit more streamlined in the interface department.

In MatterControl, You can que up multiple parts, many of the settings for the Maxx are pre-set, and it waits to generate the toolpath until you hit the "Generate" button.

I have programs to design parts (Solidworks 2012). Programs to slice-n-dice said parts. I even downloaded the v2 build manual PDF to help me set this puppy up. And now... I wait :(

EDIT - Did I forget to mention that I even bought some filament :geek:

You sound like the rest of us when we wait for a printer kit to arrive, we all know the feeling.
Best of luck setting the printer up and Cambo will help you.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy...

I just got an email from Cambo, complete with "Tracking Numbers" :D

When the packages arrive, I may not post anything for a while. I might be a bit per-occupied :!:

EDIT - OMG, I now have to clean up a spot to put it  :?

Please take a few pictures of your printer. Cambo made a build log which I will put a link to but it would be good to
see some more pictures of his great machine!
