Super Cheap and Effective Heat Curtain for Rostock Max

Post by Fiddler2070 »

Hi guys,

I made a super cheap heat retention curtain for my Rostock Max. It uses 6 clips on the top and, if you like, bottom of the machine.

You buy a clear shower curtain, fold it in half length wise and you have a double layer plastic curtain which will retain heat. Minimal modification to your rostock and easily removed any time you want. You will need a hole puncher to put holes where you put the clips. Takes about 10 seconds to install or remove!

Normally, I print at 230 with bed at 110. I had to lower the Nozzle temp to 220 because the plastic was burning slightly with the curtains on.

The curtain is too long so you will have to cut it in half, which conveniently gives you a door to the front of your machines using the same clips.

Anyway, here are the pics and stl file for the clip. you will need six clips for top and bottom if you use bottom ones. I found that you really don't need the bottom ones.

If you look closely the curtain is double walled. This makes it very effective at heat retention. the slight air gap has a heat transfer rate about 1/100 that of the plastic.

I think the curtain cost around $10 or so on amazon. I was too lazy to run to walmart to get one!

My heat spreader is a heavy duty aluminum foil! lol. I can actually feel a heat difference inside the print area of the machine with this on with the door open. The towel is to help the bed heat up faster. 110 in about 5-10 minutes depending on room temp without the heat curtain.

Note: Left door open, had to go back to bed at 110.

I had my porch door open tonight. It was 37F outside. The door is right next to the Rostock Max. Bed and Nozzle heated up no problem and printed well. It actually works really good. I was wondering what would happen with the door open and cold outside. It looks like if you have to, you could run this in a unheated garage and it will work great.

An enclosure does increase print quality. Its not massive. Bu if you are after perfection ( or trying to get away with just a bit more half-assing) it is nice to have.

Good solution btw.
