Bed Tape, Glue, etc

Post by whaleboy »

So I ran my very first print, the PEEK fan shroud, and aside from a few blobs here and there, I was quite pleased that it turned out very clean. I used blue tape on the glass, and the ABS stuck quite nicely, and came off without any fuss. I started the Layer shroud, but noticed that the ends on the bottom were warping up, and about 40% into it, it came off the bed completely and was just pushed around by the nozzle. I was there when it happened so I just killed the print right there.

I'm about to try again with the Elmer's Disappearing Purple glue. How many prints can I expect from that before re-applying? What do I use to clean the glass before re-applying?

Should the blue tape work better on PLA?

Thanks

Blue tape is really a PLA thing.
For ABS - Kapton tape or PET tape with 100C+ bed temperature or ABS Juice or Hairspray work well on an 80C bed, but controlling curling can also mean changing the model
For PLA - Blue tape, Kapton though it's less effective, clean glass, dilute Elmers glue, hairspray with a 60C bed

I've used all of the above, I find hairspray on glass or glues sticks to be the easiest. Kapton is a pain to get onto the glass, and tends to tear, PET is easier, but doesn't adhere as well in general.

Thanks, hairspray seems to be working. Currently using PLA , hairspray on a 60 degree bed.

i shave the bed with a razor blade just prior to print and that's it, nothing on the bed, seems to work just fine with PLA

then i let the bed cool prior to removal and parts pop right off

your results will invariably vary

I've used them all as well, plus typing paper (awesome for PLA) and now my all around favorite for both PLA and ABS is PEI. I've printed literally 1000 parts on it over the last couple of months and it is totally reliable. Leaves a beautiful finish on my parts too.

PEI? Or did you mean PET?

So you have determined that it keeps ABS from lifting? Any particular temperature? I certainly remember the discussion about PLA but not to much
about ABS.

Eagle, it is absolutely perfect with ABS at 80°C.
