Re: I'll just drop this here for now
Keep it coming guys, working on it as we speak today. Maybe i'll throw up a G+ video stream or something after i get back from lunch. I've added a second extruder mount, for all you guys wanting to torture yourselves haha. Anything else you can think of you'd want??? I'm working on the scanner integration as well, for a kinect style scanning rig to utilize the build plate and extrusions for the rotary device
Re: I'll just drop this here for now
John, A) very nice looking printer and the lower parts count will be fantastic for new builders. B) the delta configuration and the Rostock in particular is a perfect platform for 3 extruders. So please add positions for 3! Basically, something like the new Kraken but cylindrical with 3 nozzles would be superb for this printer.
cheers,
Michael

FYI guys, I will get the manual for the R3 done as quickly as I can. It may not be ready by the time SeeMeCNC starts shipping kits (GRR!) but it'll be damn close.

Btw. thanks and congrats to SeeMeCNC for continuously improving their products and listening to the community!
I'm very much looking forward to turning my ORION into an "R3" (or whatever it will be called) and I'm happy I went with what seems to be a great company producing quality products!

Re: I'll just drop this here for now
I'm watching the stream, I want one. I'm going to make a trip to menards once robotics dies down and grab some 1/4" MDF and get them parts cut out for one. Then Ill let them sit in my room and they will slowly assemble themselves over the course of a few months until a printer is born. It will happen, probably
John, Steve, expect some orders for some injection molded parts and stuff from me....

Re: I'll just drop this here for now
haha nylocke,
We'll be offering the wood frame parts only, so any Rostock MAX user as well as Orion User can upgrade their frame. Orion users will need a hardware kit to go with it too, prob. end up listing it as an option when ordering the frame parts only. The only real thing they'll need is the larger t slots, arms and wiring to extend the stepper motor for the extruder and the hotend platform wiring.
It was a fun project for the week, started monday, had a 'snow day' tuesday up here, and back at it on wednesday, and printing this morning. Andy's been on it, as he's working on another machine for MRRF 2014, an Orion ALL ACRYLIC model. The smaller size of the Orion makes acrylic more practical, the acrylic Rostock MAX's weren't the ideal size for that material

Very cool! I just clicked over to the DropCam to take a look (looks like it's printing the November print challenge). And this kid walks into the picture. The funny thing is that the *first* thing he did was walk up to it and touch one of the spirals being printed
. Little did he know that someone was watching
.

Re: I'll just drop this here for now
I can take care of the wiring differences between the ORION and R3 myself. If that makes it available sooner
I'd just need:
- Wood + acrylic parts
- Longer T-Slots + hardware
- Heated bed+glass
- New LCD mount (??? the ORISON one looks close; can I reuse it???)
If the price is right(-ish), I will be order #1!
Btw. do the parts need to be painted?
(I suck at painting....)

Re: I'll just drop this here for now
When I first saw this I was thinking lightheartedly to myself that for the midwest reprap fest instead of a build workshop there should be a rebuilt/upgrade workshop for current max owners. But then the gears in my head started turning and I think there is a great opportunity here.
So what are people thinking now, get the new wood parts, tear apart the max, build the new machine. This seems a bit wasteful here, one is tearing apart a perfectly functional printer and throwing half of it away. There may be another way however. How about this for a thought experiment.
DISCLAIMER: I AM MAKING THESE NUMBERS UP, THE REAL NUMBERS MAY MAKE THIS MORE OR LESS APPEALING
Uninformed assumption #1: The new unassembled kit will sell for $1000
Uninformed assumption #2: The wood only upgrade kit will sell for $300
Option 1: You pay $300 for the new kit, tear apart your machine, make new one.
Option 2: Realize that you have a perfectly functional, assembled printer that has to be worth $700. You sell the old printer, buy the complete new kit. Not only are you not out any extra money from option 1 but you saved yourself dis-assembly time. On top of that nothing was wasted and a new person has a nice 3D printer for a very reasonable price.
Now the difficulty in this is trying to match a buyer for your current machine. This is where the reprap fest fits in. There is going to be a ton of people there, we could coordinate who wants to sell and who wants to buy.
Or maybe an even better idea. Makerbot just had this huge initiative through donorschoose.org to get people to donate to get makerbot printers in schools. But being makerbots this is $2000 plus per machine. Why couldn't we set up a one time special offer for schools in the general vicinity that if they can raise $700 they can get a fully functional 3D printer from people who want to trade up to the new kit.
Of course there are logistic issues and this only helps people/schools within driving distance of the fest but I think there is some potential here.

Re: I'll just drop this here for now
Awesome , was going to wait till monday to purchase the Max for my first printer , but watching that print is just rubbing it in my face , was kinda holding out for Tax time promotion , free spool or something.
Good to know I can upgrade to the R3 once I get the hang of the Max.

Re: I'll just drop this here for now
good ideas guys, good ideas. Well, we'll have something for MRRF, that's for sure
not sure what yet, but something

Re: I'll just drop this here for now
How about adding a nice symmetric screw hole pattern around the perimeter of the top and bottom plates to make addition of a heated enclosure easier?
Re: I'll just drop this here for now
I would definitely buy an upgrade kit from the Orion.

Not trying to rush, just wondering if there's any update?johnoly99 wrote:So as it stands, it should be available in the next two weeks. Yes, kits AND assembled
Re: I'll just drop this here for now
Geneb is working on the manual, soon as the mechanical assembly instructions are done, we'll be switching over to the v2 kits shipping. Then, we'll be getting an assembled version out to another member for that manual, then we'll have the upgrade kits prob. after that. All together, prob. right around 2 wks or so to get it all up to speed

...and I'm going as fast as I can.
My wife has other ideas about what I'd be doing today, unfortunately.
The good news is that I'm 136 photos into the process and that covers the base, Onyx, wire runs, tower installs and the initial assembly of the top.
You guys are going to love building this thing. All the lessons learned over the past 18 months have been well applied.
The biggest improvement? NO MORE SANDING. EVER..
