Removable Door Hinge - RostockMAX

Post by Sonrisa3D »

Hey all -

Wanted to give a little back to the community here. I hope you find this useful.

During the build of my Rostock MAX while assembling the base I looked into the future and said "Shoot, someday I am going to want to take these doors off." I designed some removable hinges and this helped ALOT. This was especially useful for accessing the motor mounting screws when I installed motor dampers to quiet the machine down. Didn't hurt to have it in order to access all the wires during the install either.

Here is the part file. http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:171424
It is straight forward, but I'll include details and pictures below for reference.

Details -
Here is how I modified the Doors:
1. Lop the hinge off the TOP of the two doors. (only remove the TOP tab). To do this placed a piece of tape over the melamine to now crack it, took a straight edge and used that as a guide to score both sides then snapped the tab off.
2. Sand the removed tab flat.
3. Print this file: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:171424
4. Install door by placing the bottom tab in the hole and then bring the door upright.
5. Install printed door hinge
6. remove door when needed
7. Sit back and enjoy...

Installed the doors with hinge, should look like this:

I made a grove so removal of the hinges is easily done with a flat head screwdriver.

I had the luxury of not installing the doors prior to this, those who are making this modification after doors are installed are going to have to get dirty and creative with a chisel. should be OK if you are careful and sand sufficiently.

This could also be used on the other side to keep doors closed/locked.

Hope this helps, let me know if there are any questions.

Cheers,
Dave

I found your hinge by accident a couple of weeks ago and I thought that it was neat so I printed one.
I must admit that for such a simple device, it is a great device because it allows you to remove the
door. It fit the door very snugly and works fine. Thanks!

That's pretty clever. Great job!

You might want to upload it to Repables as well.
