Almost a noob from Vermont

Post by Toyguy »

I'm this close (holds up Maxwell Smart gesture) to pulling the trigger on a Rostock Max. I'm still doing a bit of research but the Max is in the lead. I had narrowed my choices down to either a Makerbot 2X or the Max. The Makerbot looks a bit easier to get going, being preassembled and theoretically pre-calibrated but the Rostock seems like it may be a bit more reliable. I also like to build stuff so the kit has that going for it and I feel like I'll know the machine better if I construct it.

I am fortunate to have a shop nearby that has both a Max and an original Makerbot. It's not a completely fair comparison but it will do. I have them printing a couple of test prints for me on both machines so I can see how they do respectively. They prefer their Max, as they have found it to be less trouble to keep running. I suspect the Max will do better on the tests simply because they prefer it, but I also know they'll give it their best shot on both machines.

Hopefully, within the week if all goes well, a Max will be on order :)

A Makerbot next to a Rostock Max? That poor Max will be infected for life.

Hey touchy, I bet you're referring to blu bin! Yeah, when I stopped by the shop there a few weeks ago, they were loving the Rostock max kits they have. Nice to have a local resource when building too in case you get stuck.

Yep, it's Blu-Bin! I didn't mention that but a local resource is a strong selling point in the Max's favor. I also see that they're doing some upgrades this weekend, thanks to you guys! I took their free class last weekend and really got the bug, not that I didn't have a bit of a yearning already :D
