E3D V4 All metal hotend
Re: E3D V4 All metal hotend
I added a 41mm printable spacer to the E3D Bowden mount. This is a little taller than the 1.5" spacers I was recommending before, and will just barely work with the existing screws. This is because the old spacers are not tall enough to wash the bottom cooling fin in air from the fan duct. The hot end would jam while printing PLA if it was on for a long time, but letting it cool and then heating it up again would clear the jam.

Re: E3D V4 All metal hotend
When printing the spacer, should the top of the spacer be on the bed? That looks to be unprintable if it is tried as shown in the pictures with the legs against the bed and the large626Pilot wrote:I added a 41mm printable spacer to the E3D Bowden mount. span of the top away from the table. I hope you understand what I meant.
Re: E3D V4 All metal hotend
Yeah, you would print it upside down and mount it with the crossmembers on top. They won't clear the fan shroud otherwise. I printed the piece in PLA with no bed heat or cooling fans and it came out pretty good.

Re: E3D V4 All metal hotend
Ok, I know that lately everything's been about the Bowden adapter and v5, but I've got a slightly modified 30mm fan duct for the v4.1 model to share and this seemed like an appropriate place: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:146012. I used the kossel groove mount adapter on my v4.1 for Bowden functionality (thing 57889) with great results so far.
I just wasn't that satisfied with the printed one that shipped with the hotend. Plus, it was blue! I mean...uh...uh...can you believe it!?!
/s
I made it a bit thicker and reduced the clearance on the diameter of the fins, giving it a more snug fit.

Re: E3D V4 All metal hotend
I upgraded my E3D Bowden mount to have better cable management (it now has strain relief) and by making the printable spacer 2mm taller. That should help wash the bottom cooling fin with more air.
BTW, I ordered some more nozzles. The 0.25mm nozzle is GREAT! I highly recommend it. I can feed PLA through it at 200mm/min and it won't stall, and with a line width of 0.3 the stuff I can print comes out looking nicer around any fine details. Better ceilings too.

Right now I'm working on converting that into something we can use. It would be great to get it to work with the Mag arms and 626Pilot's mount.
If anyone has some ideas, my CAD skills are lacking.

I've chopped the top off and made it slightly bigger, I can't get it to fit around the heat sink.

Fan Holders
I've mashed a couple of different designs from thingiverse together and created a fan holder to cool the heat sink and the print.
It uses the 30mm fan that comes with the E3d and a 40mm fan for the fan duct.

Do you happen to have a video of this? That's awesome.626Pilot wrote:I upgraded my E3D Bowden mount to have better cable management (it now has strain relief) and by making the printable spacer 2mm taller. That should help wash the bottom cooling fin with more air.

I am having a hard time visualizing how the duct mounts to the hotend, there are two pieces but how do they connect together?daftscience wrote:Fan Holders

Perhaps after I print them I will have a better understanding of how they work. Really cool work, thanks!

Two screws go through the fan duct into the 30mm mount. Right now I'm reprinting it with some better settings so I can take some pictures. Ill post them when its done.

Cool. My hot end is kaput and I'm waiting for a couple replacements in the mail, but I'll take a look at this as soon as I can.daftscience wrote:http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:159142

Ok, I just updated the thingiverse files and added this picture (I ran out of black filament when I reprinted the duct :/)
Not including the fan screws, you only need two screws to mount this thing.

DaftScience, thanks for the new revisions. I am printing them now. Excellent job. Thanks for sharing it.

My tracking number says it is in LA...how long did it take to get to your house from the time it hit our shores?Eaglezsoar wrote:I think you may get a happy surprise, I ordered two of the E3D hotends on the beginning of this month and had them in 17 days. Also, I just got shipping confirmation from E3D! It said 4 weeks when I ordered it on Tuesday. Christmas come early...
They are getting getting better with their shipping times.

I got in the day after it showed it was in the US, but I'm in orange county, so it might take another day or so to get to UT.

Usps had it in L.A. on the 26th but the site still says it's in L.A....but I don't know if it won't update until it's delivered or if there was a problem with the package.
Re: E3D V4 All metal hotend
Mine came in through San Francisco and took about 6 days from when it first got there to get to my home in Oregon. Here's what the USPS tracking looked like, so maybe you can compare the timeline/comments:bubbasnow wrote:Usps had it in L.A. on the 26th but the site still says it's in L.A....but I don't know if it won't update until it's delivered or if there was a problem with the package.
Re: E3D V4 All metal hotend
Last time my package from them went through California's customs they kept my order a week before it moved on.
Re: E3D V4 All metal hotend
Updated the mount again. The cable management tang is longer, the clip where the tang is has been shored up a little, the top mount spacer has been rotated for printing, and there is now an "all-in-one" .stl file containing everything.

Thanks for continuing to improve this. I have two copies, soon to be a third.626Pilot wrote:Updated the mount again. This is the best mount out there for the bowden E3D.

Customs anywhere else have yet to sit on a package for a week like customs in California. They make it difficult to not make it personal.bubbasnow wrote: Frowny f'n face

Re: E3D V4 All metal hotend
Customs anywhere in the US are a complete crapshoot, I worked at a company that used to frequently ship one particular item from China, sometimes it'd clear customs in 24hrs other times I've seen it take as long as a month. Sometimes they charged duty on it, sometimes they didn't.lordbinky wrote:Customs anywhere else have yet to sit on a package for a week like customs in California.
