Rostock MAX Assembly: M3 x 10mm pan head screws
Rostock MAX Assembly: M3 x 10mm pan head screws
Hello all,
I am on the step of installing the stepper motors in the assembly and I am having trouble identifying the M3 x 10mm pan head screws. On the bill of materials it says there are 16, which makes sense because there are 4 stepper motors each with 4 holes, but I can only find one packet with 16 screws in it which are NOT pan head, they are machine head (flat). This makes me think that there is either a typo in the bill of materials or I was shipped the wrong amount of screws. How many M3 x 10mm pan head screws should I have?
It would be extremely helpful if there was a page that had all the parts documented with pictures as I have spent more time trying to identify which hardware (i.e. type of screw) I need to use for each step than I have spent actually assembling the printer.

My stepper screws were in two packs. One pack of 12 for the XYZ steppers, and one pack of 4 for the extruder stepper.

screws should look like this, unless they changed it, or got mixed up parts.
as long as there m3, and long enough. they will still work.

Re: Rostock MAX Assembly: M3 x 10mm pan head screws
Thanks for this picture, helped me find these screws as well. Unfortunately, the problem Im having is that these screws are like... 1mm too short to actually bind to the stepper motors through the board. Before I go buying longer screws and trying to cut them to the right size, is there something I might be doing wrong with these M3 10mm guys?

Measure them and make sure they are 10mm, I.e. you have the right screws.
Given the only variation between builds is going to be the width of the melamine, you shouldn't have an issue with the right screws, as I and others don't.

This is what I got:

those aren't m3 screws. look at the threads in my photo above. they have a finer thread. dont put those into your stepper motor. you will damage the threads of the stepper motor. If you get them in at all.
the screws you posted look like the screws used in the rostock platform /effector assembly

Those look like #6 sheet metal screws, and will damage the threads on the stepper if you force them in.
Look in the packet with the extruder, there should be 4 in there and the others are in a separate packet, unless the packaging has changed since I built mine, which is quite possible.

Thanks cambo3d, that certainly would explain why they wont catch. Unfortunately I simply dont have any other screws that even come close to the right size. Off to the hardware store.

SeeMeCNC published some very nice photos to help us identify the fasteners and other parts. They're a little old and basically match the Kickstarter verison of the kit (I think), but I found them still useful for my May, 2013 kit.Chandley wrote:Thanks cambo3d, that certainly would explain why they wont catch. 10mm pan head screws are 10mm from the bottom of the head to the thread end. Only flathead screws are measured from the top of the head.

Indeed, I got those, but the resolution isnt great, and so I didnt see the difference in threading, especially since I dont have the actual M3s to compare. Or didnt anyway. Once you have the #4 x 3/8ths and the M3x10mm Ls side by side, its pretty obvious which is which.
That said, I wonder if labels on the bags is a lot of hassle or not. They come all nicely sorted already.

I wasn't going to post this, because it's way off topic, but the topic has changed.
I installed a TV wall bracket last weekend. It came with jillions of fasteners to match various TVs and wall constructions. Here's (some of) the packaging.
Overkill for SeeMeCNC, but as you said, some Avery labels on the bags would be easy and helpful.

I know this is pretty late but hopefully it helps whoever comes across a problem similar to this. Before i built the Rostock I never built anything before so i had to go and figure out which screws were what.
Heres a picture of the parts list as of Feb 21

I created that jpeg image my self so that i could mark off parts as i found them. I suggest you do the same if you arent familiar with screw measurements.
I dont think anyone updated it for a while so as you can see the 2 blue lines are the screws that dont match the hardware that i have.
I dont have M3 X 6mm screws and i dont have 16, 10mm screws but i do have 12, M3 X 10 mm screws.
I think there were screws that used to be used to install the upper stepper motor for the cold extruder but now those screws come half way install already.
The only problem I had with the hardware was that SeeMecnc didnt give me enough 2" or 1.75" screws.
I thought I was the only person who was really new to this so I didnt take better pictures of the screws so people could get a better view. But anyways here is the image I have.

Best advice I can give is get a ruler and match up all the screws and eliminate them as you go. Then once you get to the smaller screws that are similar you can then measure the threads and diameter of the screw. Heres the site i used to learn how to read screw sizes.

Hope it helps.

Part labels on bags would take a lot of time out of the assembly. No doubt.
