Which E3D Mount?
Which E3D Mount?
So after realizing my stock hot end is on it's way out I ordered the ever popular E3D V6 for my MaxV2. My question is, what is the best mount to use for this hot end? I know there are a couple options out there but I thought I'd get your opinions.
Thanks for the help.

If you don't want to craft a mount yourself, I'd recommend taking a look here: http://www.713maker.com. His mounts are fantastic.

I recommend the 713maker mount as well. No brainer, really.

Another vote for the 713maker mount.

You can download and print your own. If needed you can buy printed parts if you search.

If you want to print your own. This is the one I'm using.

Re: Which E3D Mount?
The 714 mount looks nice, but I have a hard time paying for something I can make my self. I'd print a mount, but my current hotend is toast. I guess that leaves one thing, do as I always seem to do, design and make my own.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
BTW can someone please explain to me why on earth this groove mount is pretty much the standard of hotend mounting? Is this considered a "J-head" as I keep seeing? I just don't understand why that would be the standard as it requires more pieces to mount it. Personally I think the stock hotend with the thread at the end is much more practical.
Thanks again.

Re: Which E3D Mount?
Until a couple of years ago when E3D appeared, pretty much the defacto standard in hotends was the JHead (hotends.com), there were others like the BuddaSchnozzle which has a different style of mount, but they were far less popular. Prior to that people pretty much made their own.BTW can someone please explain to me why on earth this groove mount is pretty much the standard of hotend mounting? The standard extruder at the time was a Wades/Gregs geared extruder, and the default model had a slot to accept the JHead.
So pretty much every printer from that period can accept a JHead.
When SeeMe made the H1 and designed the hotend/extruder for it, Steve had his own designs for those parts and those carried forwards onto the original Rostock Max, the extruder was later replaced by the EZstruder.

Re: Which E3D Mount?
I printed my mount after my hotend pulled a solo-n-carbonite trick and entombed itself. Used the top of the stock mount and spacers on the bottom of the effector plate. Some steel wire to hold it in place until the print finished. There was only a little wiggle, so I made sure I gave the printer a 2mm z hop between moves, just in case. Worked great!!BTP wrote:The 714 mount looks nice, but I have a hard time paying for something I can make my self. I'd print a mount, but my current hotend is toast. Re: Which E3D Mount?
Well I'm glad to hear the outstanding support for 713Maker. Mine should arrive this afternoon... Now that I started down this rabbit hole, I see the guys are releasing a new all metal hot end next month... go figure.

A new printer too. I saw their short clip of the new delta probing. I read some of the comments and I guess this new printer doesn't have end stops. Pretty interesting.

Re: Which E3D Mount?
Alright so here's what I came up with. My E3D showed up on Friday, and by Saturday afternoon I had the mount designed and fully machined ready for action. I had one little snag though, since the PTFE tubing runs down inside the E3D, and on the stock hot end it stops at the bowden fitting, I didn't have enough length to allow the hot end to reach the bed out towards the towers Oh well I'll have to order some.
The hole on the side is to allow the wires to pass thru and provide some strain relief.
I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do this, and if it is illegal by all means please let me know, but I made this mount available for purchase on my website if anyone is interested. Link is in my signature.
This forum has helped my out greatly with little problems here and there and I'm greatly appreciative.

Re: Which E3D Mount?
I very much doubt it's illegal for you to sell it. 713 gets away with it just fine. All you've done is design something that goes between two standardized sets of mounting geometry. It looks like a nice solid piece of machining. Would you mind giving us a look at your shop setup sometime? I always love to see other people's work environment, and seeing how different machine shops are laid out is useful to people just starting their own (Which seems to be a number of people here, since 3D printers are a good lead into NC control)

Re: Which E3D Mount?
I know it's not illegal to sell the mount, as it's my design. That's not what I meant. I didn't want my post to come across as an advertisement to sell the mount. I just thought others could benefit from the mount and they very simple to make, so I made them available for purchase. A large part of my business is making accessories for machine tools and this is really no different. 3D printing has been on my radar for a long time and I have a ton of ideas for accessories mainly for the Rostock, I just need to find the time to materialize these ideas.Xenocrates wrote:I very much doubt it's illegal for you to sell it. 713 gets away with it just fine. Re: Which E3D Mount?
I would like to point out that for actual advertisments, we have the member's marketplace section. A casual mention like that fits in pretty well in a thread discussing the question of which mount to go for. There doesn't seem to be a hard rule as to advertising related stuff, but so long as it fits in with the discussion and isn't obnoxious, it seems alright (Open source, and giving technical details, as well as chatting about it, also win bonus points with this crowd), given the "tinyboy" post was allowed to stay when it was essentially just poorly translated advertising copy, for an open source machine, posted in the right section of the forums.

I don't have a problem with it and I doubt the SeeMeCNC guys will either.

Re: Which E3D Mount?
Excellent! Thanks guys. Kinda bummed I can't use my printer until I get some more PTFE tubing, but I was able to print a calibration cube in the center of the bed and I must say, kuddos to the E3D guys, very nice extrusion and quality. I'm anxious to print some larger things. I had about 150hrs of printing on the stock hotend. Considering the construction, I'd say that's pretty good IMO.

Re: Which E3D Mount?
I recently purchased the E3D hotend to use while I rebuild my original one. I went with the 713Maker one after reading about it in the forum. I have to say I am very impressed. They look very cool and are slick. More importantly I was very impressed by the way they do business. I had a few issues with my setup and they were very quick to respond to my emails. They deserve recognition for their great customer service and that's why I am writing this. Check them out.

I agree with your statement. They make the best hotend holders that I have seen. Are they better than the printed plastic ones? Absolutely, they do not bend or sag and are made from machined aluminum available in a rainbow of differentVic wrote:I recently purchased the E3D hotend to use while I rebuild my original one. Re: Which E3D Mount?
Old thread, but I just came across it. This new mount appears to have a major benefit over the 713Maker mount (which I have). The 713 mount blocks access to the PTFE coupler on the groovemount top. It's difficult to manipulate it once the V6 is mounted.
This new mount doesn't fully encircle the top of the V6, so the coupler is easily reached.
This has become even more of a problem now that I mounted the SeeMeCNC accelerometer board on top - the coupler is now a good 3/8" (9mm +) below the board, making it almost impossible to handle the filament itself at the hotend. I'm thinking I'll have to print a coupler to go in-line with the PTFE a couple inches above the top of the board, which will allow the PTFE in the V6 to remain in place all the time.
I have some pneumatic fittings on hand I've used elsewhere as PTFE couplers, but none fit the accelerator board's opening - I think that would be the best spot for a coupler.
