Rostock Max V2 First Print Fail

Complete Noob here, and I think I'm really confused by MatterControl.
I have an E3D V6 hotend, and I spend at least an hour calibrating. As per the newest manual, the MatterControl versions differ. I have the newest version 1.2.0. The manual calls for "standard" under quality settings. But I have no presets other than "default". The manual doesnt really go into detail about the print settings other than using a preset.
I changed my nozzle size to 0.4 in the settings (e3d nozzle size), chose the ABS material preset. But I'm daunted for the most part by the rest of the settings (for now).
When the print is started and the hotend and bed start to heat, the filament already starts extruding, even tho the extruder stepper is not moving.
Secondly, the nozzle isn't close to coming down far enough on the first layer, even though I know that it is calibrated to be much closer. So as a result as you'll see in this pic, It just kind of starts bunching up around the nozzle.
So to recap, It seems like the nozzel is not close enough to the bed when printing, even though it's right on target for calibration (i made sure to calibrate with both the hotend and bed heated to optimal temps) And it seems that it's not extruding fast enough, as well as actually printing too fast. I've been trying to fiddle with the settings in MatterControl, but havnt found a solution yet.
Any tips would be appreciated!!!
Also, is there a comprehensive guide to setting up Repetier-host for the rostock max v2?
