Rostock Max v2 Freaks out!

(The wires that are exposed at the moment are for the fans. I haven't connected themy et.)

This machine was able to print the two fan shrouds but after that, it freaks out and either shoots out of bounds or picks an arbitrary 0,0,0 point to begin printing. It varies every single time I click print. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I've been battling with it for over a month and can't figure out what the heck is going on!

I'd start with the wiring to the limit switches, if there is a bad connection or if they share a tower with motor wires, noise can cause them to generate false positives, which will randomly stop carriages moving. You can disable the test when printing in the firmware, but you should only do that to verify it's the issue.
I'd also
Verify the drive gears on the steppers are tight,
Slow the travel speed way down so you get a better idea of what's going on,
Check the stepper drivers aren't overheating,
Verify there is no mechanical drag on the carriages,
Check the belts for damage.

I've seen printers do some funky sh*t, but that's pretty much the topper. :)
The Z axis lowers a lot faster than the X and Y which surprises me. I'd be tempted to blame crosstalk on the end-stop switches right off, but without the machine in front of me, I can't be sure.

The only visible issue I can see is that you've got the Onyx installed incorrectly, but that's just asthetics. :D

I'll check and see if the gears are slipping on any of the driver motors, but I do know the belts are unobstructed, and aren't slipping. I was able to print the fan shrouds without any issues btw. I'll check the end-stop switches too (I think that's what you're referring to when you say "limit switches").

I don't think the carriages are stopping or slowing though. They all start moving at the same speed, then one of them speeds up. The tricky part is... it doesn't always do the same thing. Sometimes, it will attempt to print in a completely different point in space.

I'm at a loss. I've had this machine for 2 months now and STILL can't seem to get it to function properly. At this point, I'm feeling as though I have a 40 pound paper weight sitting on my desk. :(

Have you contacted support yet?

Have you tried printing from an SD card vs USB? Do you get the same results?
Which slicer are you using?

I have sent the video to them via fb, but I have not called them on the phone as of yet. I probably should reach out to them at this point though.

I have not tried that as of yet. I can try this option tonight when I get back from the office. I'm using the stock slicer program that came with the machine. I can't remember the name at this point, but I'll get back to you when I get home.

I am currently using MatterControl 1.5 as the software interface or "Slicer" program. I'm currently uploading a video showing another strange anomalous element that has recently developed. When I click the "ALL" button to send the arms home to the stopper switches, it seems to jump further down by 10cm rather than going up to the switches.

Recheck your wiring for the endstop at the switches. It appears that the firmware thinks that the carriages are against the switches.

Wires seem to be secure and plugged in accordingly. What does a flashing orange light on the circuit board mean?

My v2 is doing something very similar. I have followed the setup guide word for word and am at a loss as to what is happening. The calibration videos, and belt tensioning walk throughs are somewhat vague. I do not think that the arms would do that if they are passing the end stop tests and the calibration macro. It's odd, it must be in matter control. Let me know if you get yours to stop trying to print on the outside edge of the glass. I will post a video of what mine is doing, I hope we can get our fancy paper weights working soon.

It's dependent on which light it is. It's likely got TR silkscreened next to it, is near the USB plug, and means Transmit Received if so.

Now that I think about it, go into your settings&controls in mattercontrol, then options, and check that your "slice engine" is not Slic3r.

When I go home tonight, I'm going to try some of the suggestions here. I ended up getting busy with other projects and had to push my 3D printer to the side for a while. But now I'm back to it with a vengeance! I must get this sucker functioning properly! :)

Hey, have you been able to figure out what was going wrong? I'm honestly considering breaking down the machine and re-routing the wiring in all 3 pillars rather than just one. From what I've gathered thus far, the chances of signal interference is pretty high.

I think this may have been what caused it initially. I remember exploring the other slicer engines before this issue occurred. I now have it set to cura, but i still can't calibrate the machine now. How do I reverse the weirdness that Slic3r caused?

To test that ^, send the M119 command in the G-Code Terminal at the same time you home your machine. If the subsequent data in the terminal reads:

Code: Select all

 x_max:H y_max:H z_max:H
then that means that the firmware is detecting that the endstops are being "pressed". (The opposite of x_max:H would be x_max:L. If you get this after sending M119, well... that would be beyond my skillset.)

As for the slic3r issue, I would clear the EEPROM and re-upload the firmware, or re-install MatterControl. Or both.

H is when the switches are closed (hot end is as far up as it can go) also called the home position. L is when the switches are not depressed.
That is a good test to try. You should to it when you move the carriage up by hand and then again after it is pulled down a little.

Earlier posts you said you get some sort of error when you try to load firmware. You should diagnose that first. What is the error?

Oh and by the way what slicer or interface you use to test this is not the problem. One can know that because you get the same problem using the LCD display to home the machine. So don't worry about the slicer yet. Using mattercontrol as a terminal is a good way to see if the machine responds with any error messages.

Yes. I ended up using my laptop and was able to clear the EEPROM and reinstall the drivers/firmware. This solved the issues listed above, HOWEVER... it ended up manifesting a new issue (as seen in the video link below):

The explanation in that post lays out all the steps I took to try and solve this issue. HAAALP! Lol
