No real drive, not having cut open a USB connection is seemed like the same number of solder joints and additional safety for no extra work. Based on your comment, perhaps it is more work than it is worth :)

Well, in my limited testing the Pi will almost always boot on the wall wart, and sometimes boot on the power from the Rambo. I am going to order the buck convertor and give it a whirl.

Searching Amazon for buck convertors gives you a hug variety, but this was a unique option. Might even be worth somehow mounting it where you can read the led.

Well, larger power supply for the Pi didn't resolve the booting issue with the camera attached. External power assistance for the camera didn't help either, so all that is left is software. Not sure what to think. I guess find a different camera.
