Thin edge printing as dashed line

Post by Gumleezy »

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue successfully printing a channel on a specific part that has very thin walls. The channel is formed by two concentric arcs which form walls that are about .5mm thick. The issue I'm having is that one wall prints just fine, and the other is printing as a dashed line. Does anyone have any advice on how to solve this? I'm very new to this.

Thanks!

It sounds like your slicer is struggling with the wall thickness being too close to your minimum extrusion width.

Making that thin section larger is the simplest solution. Switching to a smaller nozzle diameter and re-slicing would be the other way to go about it.

Perhaps others will have more solutions, but that's all I know to do.

Ok thank you, I had a feeling that edge may have been a bit thin. After speaking to the higher ups, I've gotten the go ahead to make it a bit wider, so I'll make another attempt and see what comes out.

As a general rule, your minimum extrusion width will be about nozzle + 10% because of dye swell and how the hot-end nozzle "wipes" the layer flat as it moves. It's a good idea to make thin parts a minimum of 1.5x your nozzle for a single wall part, and 2.5x for a double wall. Your mileage may vary, and I'm sure that each slicer behaves differently than the others.
