Hello from State College, PA, USA

Post by rudero »

Hi everyone,

I am a biologist/physiologist with my own laboratory and always in need of improving/adding to experimental rigs or other setups to make my or my students' lives easier.

I am new to 3D printing and just acquired a (built) Rostock MAX v1 (RAMBo 1.1b) and in the process of setting up software/calibrations to start testing it. The printer has the Bowden extruder (on the side) and has mainly printed nylon (taulman 618).

I have some basic experience with arduino and other programming languages but g-code is new to me.

I was going to upload the "new" Repetier firmware (0.91) and move through the software installation/calibration procedures in the Rostock MAX manual (downloaded off SeeMeCNC website) but wanted to check whether this is the appropriate way to go with an (slightly older) v1 machine?

Anyway, please to meet you all!

If you are running 0.8 you definitely want to upgrade, it has a bad bug which causes the printer to randomly halt, though I personally printed for over a thousand hours without seeing it. It did finally show up on one of my prints and it's pretty irritating.
Luckily upgrading the firmware requires basic knowledge of arduino and no knowledge of GCode.
I believe the later RostockMax V1 are all physically the same as the V2 as far as the firmware is concerned, so it should be easy.
If you have a very early V1 like mine, then you'll need to change the pulley tooth count and the uStepping from 16 to 8x, probably adjust the digipot settings because very early RAMBO boards had different motor drivers than the later ones.

Hi Polygonhell,
Thanks for your reply.

Yes it runs firmware v0.83 from what I can gather. The only instructions on how to upgrade the firmware I have found so far are here: http://reprap.org/wiki/Rostock_MAX#Software_and_Setup

But this video "Installing Youtube" (under the Software and Setup heading) is of terrible quality.. Are there any better instructions available to your knowledge?

Thanks.
