a cheap and easy mod to fit the reprap heated bed in the H1

Post by drkow »

The reprap heated bed can be purchased for around $25 including shipping from ebay and other stores: http://www.ebay.ca/sch/i.html?_nkw=repr ... m270.l1313

I purchased my heated bed and RAMPS kit from reprapdiscount.com via ebay: http://stores.ebay.ca/fashionplaza86

They are a pleasure to deal with and do 2-3 day shipping to most of the world.

First, take off your 4 bent rods, and unbend 1 end on all of them. Put a new bend in the rod about 1-1/8" from the bottom, and reinstall the rods. The bend should now be right where the rods come out of the nut:

Loosen the z-axis idler and notch the blue plastic square next to it so that the idler can be loosened even more, allowing the machine to become marginally wider:

Now loosen the 6 blue squares on the bottom, and 2 of the blue squares holding the smooth rod on the x axis. Move the 4 legs of your printer outward so that you stretch the whole machine in width. After stretching, the new width of the bottom of my machine is 8-5/8" measured from the outside of the legs.

Mount a wooden or metal plate about 7/8" above the acrylic build platform. You should put it on springs like the reprap folks are doing, so that the bed can move down if you hit it with your print head rather than cracking the glass.

Take your reprap heated bed, shave (I used a dremel + diamond cutting disk) the top and bottom and mount the board sideways in your H1. After cutting, my board is just under 8-1/4" wide, with barely 1mm of space between it and the threaded rods. You can file the threading off the roads where the board sits to gain another few mm of space if you need more clearance.

This mod will give you some extra print area on the x axis. Optionally, you can stretch your Y axis a little while you've got everything loosened up to gain a bit of print area in that direction too. The measurements from the assembly manual leave a generous amount rod protruding on every axis allowing us to increase the build area a bit.

Great! The main problem to make machine wider is loop belt. It's not a problem to rebolt all rods and even to replace with longer ones. I did find a way to make a loop belt from straight belt...
