which steppers come with the RAMPS kit?
which steppers come with the RAMPS kit?
Do you ship the same 2.5A steppers with your RAMPS kits?
Re: which steppers come with the RAMPS kit?
Yes we do. They are the same NEMA 17, pn# 42BYGHW811
Re: which steppers come with the RAMPS kit?
From what I'm reading, RAMPS functions better with a motor in the 1-2A range, and cannot fully power the 2.5A motors. The motors run nice and cool because of this, and the stepper drivers run very hot because they have to be set pretty high to drive the 2.5A motors. Seems like the 42BYGHW609 would be a much better fit for RAMPS http://www.wantmotor.com/ProductsView.a ... =75&sid=80

even with the 3/4 axis parallel board, you arent running them at full current... the dip switches on thoes boards are set for 50% current... with the ramps, the polulu's have current limiting potentiometers... it will still get warm based on the power going into it and the limiting its doing for the output.. but the heatsink on em should be fine.. unless I'm not factoring something in with my thinking at least... when i go to ramps, I may add a little fan on the board like the parallel board has....

Your logic is spot on, my point is that these high torque steppers cost a few bucks more, and you can take advantage of that torque with the parallel port driver as it goes up to and above 2.5A, but on RAMPS the motors work at a reduced capacity.
I believe the max of the RAMPS config is about 2A, so with the 2.5A steppers at 2A you're effectively getting 4/5ths of the advertised torque, or 3840g.cm, AND your drivers run very hot.
With the 1.7A motors, you get 4000g.cm torque @ 1.7A, and the stepper drivers run cooler.
The reprap wiki recommends using motors with at least 40 N-cm (4078.848 g-cm) of torque for the extruder, the other motors can usually be weaker.
I'm using the 2.5A steppers on RAMPS right now and had a little more difficulty tuning them, I had to reduce my travel speed down to 40mm/s to eliminate skipped steps.

Re: which steppers come with the RAMPS kit?
drkow, John here. I'm using these steppers on a RAMPS machine as well, and though they are a tad more picky with the current adjustment, I'm printing as fast as with my Mach3 machine. Although there might be a more ideal motor to use, to keep the cost down, we use the same motors. The other advantage is, they're good for other machines if you ever outgrow an H-1(.1)
