What do you guys think would be best filament for AR15 parts
I am wondering what type filament would be best for printing AR15 parts. Like the Lower, Magazine, Grip, forward grip, picatinny rails. I was looking at ABS Plus or looking for an PC/ABS blend. Nylon 618,645 is not good, has too much elasticity. Is there a place where one can place special orders on some one's own filament blend? Any help would be greatly appreciated. These parts can be printed on these 3D printers, you just have to have the right kind of filament.

Abs is what they use (defdist) , I think Nylon would warp too much . I Wouldn't use anything else because that is what they tested.

El... Have you considered purchasing a filament extruder and experimenting with your own blends? Something like the filabot http://filabot.com/

I've been playing with Impact Resistant High temp crystal ABS lately. Man this stuff is tough! Had a hell of a time getting good prints with it too. Until I discovered the min temp for extrusion with it is 260c ranging up to 280c. So fairly high temps for ABS. But not typical ABS either. Extremely clear due to it's purity when printed. This might also be interesting for your application, you could true see the internals of the gun after assembly.
Fantastic Plastic out of Newzeland is where I got mine. Their shipping is really fast too. Got mine in a couple of days to my doorstep here in Canada.

Could you provide a link. I tried Nylon, not good. ABS is just not good either, a bit too brittle. Where can I get this crystal ABS? Do you have a link?Flateric wrote:I've been playing with Impact Resistant High temp crystal ABS lately. Man this stuff is tough! Had a hell of a time getting good prints with it too. I thought about this and would like to mix an PC/ABS blend. I will check out the filabot. Thankseasybeans wrote:El... Have you considered purchasing a filament extruder and experimenting with your own blends? Something like the filabot http://filabot.com/

Here's a link to the high impact crystal filament I referred to.

I will be giving this filament a try. Sounds promising. Hopefully it doesn't crack as easily as regular ABS.Flateric wrote:Here's a link to the high impact crystal filament I referred to.

How difficult would you say it is to work with that ABS crystal high impact filament? Does it warp a lot like regular ABS?Flateric wrote:I've been playing with Impact Resistant High temp crystal ABS lately. Man this stuff is tough! Had a hell of a time getting good prints with it too. Have you considered just using ABS and using the BJB infiltrant epoxy? I haven't made an ar15 lower, but I did print the Liberator and fired it 20+ times with no failures except the barrels expanding and losing pressure after 5-6 shots. I just did an acetone vapor bath too...
If you used that epoxy, the lower would last at least a few hundred rounds, easily. Perhaps even 1000+.
I've used the stuff with excellent results.
