Where is the 3DP community's coronavirus response?

Hi everyone. Long time no see. I haven't been 3D printing lately. My printers are in storage. Perhaps the time has come to bring them out. I saw a story recently about some Italians who printed ventilator valves for a hospital. The manufacturer wanted US$11,000 (equivalent) for each one, had none ...

Re: heat break stuck

I'm not familiar with this hot end, but it looks like plastic is oozing out of the threaded hole where the heat break screws into the heat block. This is most likely because the nozzle wasn't tightened with the hot end at the right temperature, or there is some crud in the nozzle, or both. (Some of ...

Re: Heuristic (AI) calibration for delta printers on Smoothie

No. My code is in a branch of Smoothie. None of it has been merged upstream, although I have seen some of it show up in LinearDeltaSolution.cpp (like, it's totally identical, down to the G-code letters, only difference being that some comments aren't there). Last I read, Arthur is not big on adding ...

What's a good PCB assembly service?

I'm looking for a board house that has decent pricing on runs from 10 to 100 assembled PCBs. I used Seeed's PCBA service to produce one prototype already. Their pricing is pretty good. However, their parts catalog is limited. If it's necessary to use something they don't have, they charge a LOT ...

Re: Why you should NEVER use SketchUp, which is a steaming pile of crap.

Late update: In September of 2016, I bought a laptop with a 17" display, and installed Autodesk Fusion 360. I had thought to import all my SketchUp stuff into it, and go from there, as there is an importer. However, what gets imported is meshes, not F360's abstract breps. If you create a cube in ...

Picture this: Your uncle who likes to drink beer in a two-car garage crammed full of mills, lathes, and bins full of transducers and BUNA-N O-rings, while milling steel, tearing down and scrutinizing tools from Harbor Fright and DeWilt and explaining every last thing from the plastic it's sheathed ...

Re: I cannot figure out PETG . . . please help

With PETG, the Z height setting is critical. PLA and ABS will forgive you for your Z being a little off, but PETG will just slowly accumulate until it becomes a problem. My advice is to use the smallest Z height you can, while still getting adequate 1st layer adhesion. 255 is a decent temp for PETG ...

Re: I cannot figure out PETG . . . please help

Make sure you are not over-extruding. Do a filament calibration, like in the first steps of my Delta dimensional accuracy calibration (see sig). Make sure your Z height is set as close to perfect as possible. Over-extruding, or having the Z height too tall, will guarantee that PETG builds up and ...

Re: Possessed Printer

Flaky thermistor (or connection) for sure, probably a shaky PID tune as well. Easiest thing to try: replace your thermistor. Second easiest thing to try: replace the wires and all connectors between the thermistor and your controller. You can lash some two-conductor wire to your existing cable ...

Unless you changed your firmware at the same time, I don't know why it would do that unless it was getting a bad sensor reading and halting on that account. Does anything show up in the console when you connect over serial? Shut off the printer and unplug the hot end heater and thermistor connectors ...

No. It's behind the official release. I will merge in the changes when I have a chance. I moved, and haven't set up the printer yet.

Re: Impressions: Duet vs. Smoothie

I know about the Replicape. They would've had access to a bigger pool of developers if they had used the Pi. I think they used the BBB because of its coprocessors, which they call PRUs, but that was never necessary. The Pi has a DMA controller, and can send waveforms to stepper drivers many times ...

Re: Impressions: Duet vs. Smoothie

I'll continue to use Smoothieboards because I wrote the heuristic calibration system for them, and it works better for me than Duet's firmware. It gives you a full depth map after the calibration, as well as after setting up Z-only correction (if you want to), so you know what you're really getting ...

Re: I wrote a preprocessor that adds coasting support to KS.

Ah - so they removed a perfectly good function used by millions of lines in existing code all over the planet, because someone likes perl regex more than POSIX regex, thus creating countless thousands of support issues just like this one. I didn't use any fancy regex, just a " " for the delimiter ...

Re: How-to: Dimensional Accuracy Calibration for Delta Printers

I get what your saying, but understand that my glass isn't what I would call flat and seems to warp pretty good at a few spots. I don't think glass can be warped unless it was handled very roughly during production, jostled badly before it was done cooling. During production, it's in a molten state ...

Re: How-to: Dimensional Accuracy Calibration for Delta Printers

GeckoTek won't be flatter than glass. There are tiny undulations on the surface. I got sick of how easily the plates get scratched and have taken to clamping the glass disc to the GeckoTek aluminum base, as it works very well as a heat spreader.

Re: How-to: Dimensional Accuracy Calibration for Delta Printers

If you're using a 0.5mm SeeMe nozzle, I recommend setting extrusion width to 0.55. You may measure that it's less than that, but that could be due to contraction from cooling. It's usually not a good idea to use any value even slightly less than the nozzle diameter. If you do, you may see weird ...

nope. still waiting, looks like they are making a lot of compromises, so we'll see. From what i read they changed to a different sls printer whose tolerances weren't as tight, but they are adding a bushing or something to get rid of the wobble. I got an email about this a week or two ago. Having ...
