Thanks eaglezoar, I think I'd be happier with the Brassfill if I could just get a bit more shine on it.
I'll maybe try a different polishing method.
@geneb, I printed that lid at high speed just as a rough draft, hence the poor surface finish.

Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
Hmmm, not sure about the Brassfill. Seems to come out a bit gritty compared to Bronzefill. The promo photos look fantastic (don't they always) but I can't seem to get a finish on it that I'm happy with. To be fair, Brassfill is still in beta. Hopefully, they'll improve the formula. Brassfill ...

Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
Thanks guys. Currently working on an alternative lid with a small plaque on the top featuring a rising trout. Tried a plaque in Bronzefill but it didn't stand out too well against the Timberfill. I'm going to try again with a sample of Colorfabbs new Brassfill which just came in the post. I'll post ...

Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
Made a new version of the fly box I posted earlier in this thread. It has a brass catch now instead of the magnets as I found the flies would stick to the magnets on closing the lid. Made the partitions slightly higher too to prevent the flies moving out of there compartments. I printed it in a deep ...

Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
I used small, ball bearing type shot in one of these tumblers ... http://www.growingtreetoys.com/product/rock-tumbler-kit
I let it run for about 8 hours but it barely made an impression on the bronzefill.

Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
@ mhackney, have you had any luck polishing the bronzefill ?
I tried with a tumbler using small, round shot but the results were rubbish tbh.

Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
To keep with the fly fishing theme, I thought I'd post up a couple of pics of a fly box I designed for my dry flies. It's printed with Colorfabb Woodfill at 0.3mm. I might have another go at 0.2mm to try for a better finish but I'm pretty pleased with it for a first attempt. [img]http://i882 ...

Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
Do you sand the parts first or do you just put them straight into the tumbler ?
I just bought a tumbler myself to try with Bronzefill. Just waiting on the shot being delivered.

Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
I am printing some test coupons of the ColorFabb bronze and copper to break test. I won't be surprised if they are quite strong, I've tried tweaking the rings in the photo above and no sign of cracking. It will be interesting to see the failure mode - clean break vs jaggy break. I have the rings in ...

Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
Just been taking a look at some of the prints online made with the Colorfabb bronzefill and copperfill and the results are indeed very impressive, especially once it's polished.
Looks like some folk are using good old Brasso to polish it.

Haven't got round to it yet, the season's closed here in the UK, but I'm sure it'll make a great wee brook reel.mhackney wrote:Looks awesome scobo. You can't go wrong with basic black. Have you fished it yet?

Just wondered how you achieved the pattern on the gold and black version.
Is it a new design of the spool or a tweak of the print settings ?

Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
Thought I would upload a shot of my first attempt. Thanks for the files Michael, great work. The reel works better than I was expecting. Probably have another go with some better quality filament.
