Nice. I was going to but then found one on eBay for ten bucks, my time is worth more than that.
Wow - what a difference they make!

Yes they do! Though if you use a plastic bucket for the bottom, they will get soft after a few hours! This one is permanently collapsed.Captain Starfish wrote:Nice. I was going to but then found one on eBay for ten bucks, my time is worth more than that.

Re: Cyclone seperator for my CNC
It's pulling warm air from the router through it. That and with the door closed to my shop it gets quite warm in there. My shop vac is probably a little too powerful as well.Khalid Khattak wrote:barry why it becomes soft?... !!!!

Re: Cyclone seperator for my CNC
My lowes bucket did the same thing with a 5.5HP shop vac. Ended up using a chlorine bucket with a screw lid. It's half the size but thicker.

I used the metal tank of an old 1960s vintage smaller shop vac (about 6 or 7 gal in size) that I found at the dump years ago I kept it as it "Might come in handy one day"
Re: Cyclone seperator for my CNC
I use a "Cyclone lid" on a 30 gallon garbage can. Works great!

Re: Cyclone seperator for my CNC
I collapsed a steel garbage can. Was cleaning up under the chop saw and a chunk of plywood stuck to the end of my vac hose. Can just folded into itself. I have an issue of shopnotes around here somewhere that has plans for a wooden cabinet for my cyclone. Uses paper leaf bags in the bottom so they can just be thrown into the compost heap/bonfire with no issues.geneb wrote:I use a "Cyclone lid" on a 30 gallon garbage can. Works great!

Re: Cyclone seperator for my CNC
My shopvac already has that arrangement built in, Gene, but the paper filter still managed to clog up all the time. Since adding a proper cyclone (the sloped walls etc add a lot more effectiveness to the inlet/outlet arrangement) it's been so much better again.
Re: Cyclone seperator for my CNC
I use it with my ShopBot and it works great. My vac source is a 1.5HP dust collector with a 4" hose.

Re: Cyclone seperator for my CNC
I haven't actually gotten around to installing it and doing anything with it yet, but this is the one that I printed. http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:285743 I need to modify the top cap to fit my regular shop vac's hoses, though. I liked the internal fins of the design.

Re: Cyclone seperator for my CNC
I wonder if the fins actually help or will they just perturb the airflow enough to kick dust into the exhaust flow?

I saw this a few days ago. I would assume his spiral works because it physically deflects the dust, but the small spiral in the design above doesn't seem like it would be that effective is this situation. I'd be willing to bet that the spirals width is likely inversely proportional to the length of the cone and the air speed. similar to how the riffling on a gun barrel is very shallow but effective.

What's real fun is to suck up a coin or washer. They just spin around the top at a billion miles an hour until something hits them, or you shut off the vac!

Well that's bucket number 2. I think it's a combination of the heat, it's been in the low 90's, upper 80's since I turned on the vac, and the amount of time it's running. This is after 4 hours continuous. Checked the hoses, nothing is clogged.
