Max V2 - Printing Above Bed

Post by mooose14 »

I've had my Rostock Max V2 several years now and I've always had pretty good print quality. Just recently, what seems like out of nowhere, it just will not print level.

I've done the 7 point auto level several time and each time I have the same results and what I would consider a good level. I have one of the 7 zero'd at 0.00 offset and the rest are no more than 1.00 from the bed.

I've check x/y/y travel calibration, all good.

But when it prints the first layer, I can clearly see 2-3mm of gap between the hotend and bed. But not all the way around the perimeter.

I'm really stumped. Anyone seen anything like this or have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Is the gap universally low around the perimeter? If so, your horizontal radius might be off and the hot end is moving in a convex arc.

The file I'm pretty has ~60mm radius. So the outline is something like 65mm. It's definitely something in the software (MatterControl). You can follow the z height around the first layer and see it go from a consistent 0.32 up over 1.0 and back down to 0.32. (See gcode in link)

I can SEE the problem, I just have no idea how to fix it.

What is your V2 using for a probe?
Secondly, I'm not a fan of mattercontrol, so it would be to easy to say that's the problem,,, although I do recall they had a problem with their "auto calibrate" feature at one time.
I have a V2, and never bothered with installing a probe to be able to auto calibrate it,,,, with the melamine structure, and humidity fluctuations in my house, it could definitely use it.

If you're trying to use MatterControl's "calibration" feature, that's probably your issue. I've never known an instance of it working for deltas. I'd give Cura a shot. An HE280 wouldn't be a bad upgrade either.

Mac - It doesn't have a probe installed. It was manual leveled with paper.

geneb - I just recently updated MC 2.x and it has had less than stellar prints since. This bed level mess has only started since I tried using the bed level feature. I hear Cura was solid so I'll definitely give it a try. Also, I have a E3D hot end. The original melted a couple years ago and I've been really happy with the E3D.

I'll post back with some updates.

If you can, upgrade to a Duet3D and an SE300 or a Duet Smart Effector. It'll blow your mind. ;)

geneb - Are there any profiles for v2 made? Or are the v3.2 profiles adequate?

The v3.2 profiles are for duet-equipped machines, so you'll likely have some tweaking to do. Pay close attention to the start & end gcode in the profile, it will probably do things you don't want. (like over-retract or feed the filament)

Turning off Bed Leveling in MC was a huge improvement.

Haven't got Cura to work correctly but I'll keep poking at it.
