New Power Supply / Opening the Bottom

I think my power supply is finally giving up. Over the past few months occasionally when I turn the printer on something would make a loud whirring noise and the temps would both show up as def. It only happened here an there and usually turning the machine off and then on again would fix it. Now it seems to be happening more than it is not. I think it is the power supply fan making all the noise. Can anyone recommend a modular 12V power supply that they have used successfully in the v2? I want to cleanup all the wiring while I am in there swapping it out as well. Is it possible to open the bottom of the machine by unscrewing the top of the bottom and sliding it up the rails to reveal the inner workings? I don't see anything that would prevent that from working.

That power supply looks the business.

But the newer rostocks do not use a computer type power supply. They use an industrial one where you have screw terminals to attach wires.

With these power supplies you can also tune the voltage a bit (9 to 15 V or thereabouts). This will enable you to give a bit more power to the heated bed and i find this solution more convenient. But if you are one of those types that is afraid of electricity the the atx type psu you linked would be ideal for you.

The stock psu is not that great but ok, it could have a failing fan inside ad replacing that could solve your problem. There is a thread here where someone opens it up and tidies up all the junk cables.

Also check the fan on your rambo, mine started sounding like my printer was diesel motor powered.

Another thing to check is the on-off switch of the printer, the psu wires could be coming loose.

Thanks for all the info, do you have a link to the newer industrial style power supplies. Now that you mention the rambo fan I am starting to think that might be the culprit. I will have to pull it out and check closely tonight.

What would cause the rambo fan to go crazy.

Yes, you can slide the top of the Rostock up the rails to change out the power supply, with some spring clamps on the rails to hold it up.

You should be able to find them on ebay as well. SeemeCNC doesn't sell the non-ATX PSU on their website yet.

Awesome! Thanks for the link didn't realize SeeMeCNC was selling the power supply. I will go ahead and grab one. Also glad to see it is possible to lift that bottom top off. I will do that once the new power supply comes in and cleanup all the wiring that has been bothering my since I put it together.

Got the bottom opened up and all the wires wrapped up. Once the power supply arrives, hopefully this afternoon, I will get it installed and route all the wiring. It already looks much better with the mass of unneeded wires from the original power supply gone. I also added a second set of wires to the heatbed so hopefully that will help with heatup times. Had to use a solid core wire as that was what I had laying around, do you think that will cause any problems?

The length of the 18ga wires that go to the bed are perfectly adequate for the job they're doing. Adding more/bigger wire isn't going to do anything.

Interesting I read multiple posts where people stated that adding a second wire helped but maybe that was just placebo. Would adding the second wire hurt? If so I will try to unsolder it.

Should not hurt a thing. Make sure the screws are snug where the wires connect to the Rambo.

Good to hear, the less soldering I have to do the better as I am no good at it. The power supply should be here tonight so I am excited to get everything wired back up and be printing again.

You're going to have a problem with solid core wire in the compression terminals - it doesn't compress. If you must use more wires, use stranded. (a compression terminal with solid core wire is a melted connector waiting to happen.)

Well sadly my power supply upgrade kit didn't come with anything other than the power supply. I have sent and email to seemecnc but will have to wait until the rest of the components come.

If you are not comfortable with high voltages 110v or 220v dependin on where you live, get a buddy or post pictures here before you plug it in.


It is not difficult at all, low probability of something bad happening but if it does go wrong the consequences can be very bad.

Oh, another thing, psu's have big capacitors inside them. So you should wait atleast 15 minutes AFTER unplugging them before you fisdle with it.

The rest of the components came yesterday so I was able to get my max back together. One thing that became a problem was when I went to drill the new holes for the power supply I realized my version of the max has a large hole for the old power supply and as such no where to screw into. I ended up using the extra side panel ( the one that is replaced with the new vented panel) to bridge the gap and then mounted the power supply onto that. It worked quite well so I have posted some photos below in case anyone else is in the same situation.

FYI anyone who comes across this later and also gets the kit, you do not need to use the side plate to bridge the gap, the hole in the bottom is actually good for ventilation on the psu... you can use this template that is linked on the psu kit page to mark the holes to drill.

I printed that template but there was no almost no way for me to position it such that none of the holes would overlap with the big hole in the bottom of the printer.

Does anyone have a picture of this? Because I also don't see how to orient it so all four screws can be secured without using the extra side plate.

I've the Max V2 from July 2015, so I have even more ventilation holes in the bottom than the above poster.
