Flying cold end?

Has anybody seen/built a non-bowden tube flying hot/cold extruder for the V2? I've seen the suspended systems. The general wisdom is that the stepper is too heavy to fly but I'd be willing to go slow in order to get rid of the bowden tube setup...

I used to have my cold end extruder "flying" above the effector, but there is still a bowden tube connecting it to the hotend. I ditched it... not because of the weight, as it was using a counterweight pulley, but because of the mass. When the machine was printing, the flying extruder bounced when rapid moves occurred. That made the edges come out non-straight.

(sorry for that poor english, I tried my best :D )


As for a direct drive extruder for the V2 I personally recommend the Titan Aero, just because that is what I'm using. To compensate for the extra mass/weight, Jerk and acceleration were reduced, but I'm still printing reasonably fast. 60mm/s print and 200mm/s travel moves.

Some folks around here have the Nimble (remote direct drive), but can't talk about it as I never tried it myself.

To stop the extruder bouncing you can make three of these:

I really like flying extruders. Much better output than a big long bowden tube.

What stepper motor are you using with the Titan Aero?

They call it Nema17 Slimline: http://e3d-online.com/Electrical/Steppe ... n-Slimline

Some people are using and even smaller one, which is +/- 30g lighter but with a 1.8º stepping angle vs the 0.9º of the Slimline.
