Gary the robot

Post by Nylocke »

I am apart of FTC, FIRST Tech Challenge, part of the FIRST robotics program. This years game involves a unique set of challenges, as per the game video:

Our robot stared out going after the cube aspect of the game, but we have progressed to hanging later in the season after qualifying for the state competition, which is coming up, 2 weeks from now.

Our robot has several 3D printed parts on it, designed my myself of another one of our team members, and then printed on 1 of 3 printers, either my original printer, a Rostock Mini, my old work's printer, a MAX, or my current printer, a custom built and self sourced Ultimaker. The parts range in material from PLA, to ABS, and even (several extensive and fairly large assemblies of) Nylon. Pictures of parts follow:

I will attach some youtube videos of our hanging system soon.

The last few pictures are of the hanging system, it is a system of Nylon cones that fit inside each other and get extended by some stretchy rope that is threaded throughout them. Then at the bottom we have a leadscrew that gets driven by a motor connected by a sprocket and chain. At the top there is a hook that we latch onto the center rod with, and then we drive the leadscrew down and we lift our bot into the air. the nylon cones support almost all of the weight of the bot. All of the nylon parts were printed on my Ultimaker at .3mm layer height (save time, same strength and relative finish as .2).

That is a cool looking bot!
It had to take a lot of hours to design and build that.
Great job!
