Rev3 Onyx on 48V?

I have a 48V 7.3A power supply kicking around. Any reason I can't run my Onyx on this with a SSR?

48v omg... don't know really, but I think you need more amps.

It will draw way more current than you have available. burn out your 48v supply or blow fuses/breakers...

V=IR is a bummer.

I'm thinking that it will take down the electrical grid in Atlanta :lol: Seriously, though, even with a voltage regulator to get it to the proper voltage, you'll need more available current than the power supply has. The results will probably result in the smoke escaping. And once it's out, you'll never be able to get it back in.

Yeah, unless that supply is an expensive current limiting one, an Onyx at 1 ohm will overdraw that supply by a factor of 7 or 8.

Back to the drawing board.

I have one of these too, is it gonna be enough?

You really need a 20A+ 24V power supply to run a R3 Onyx directly.

Most R3 beds are a little above 1-ohm (why they are being sold for cheaper since they have too high of a resistance to generate the power/heat required on 12V). So if resistance=1.2ohm and you have a 24V power supply, V=IR says that you need a power supply that can supply 20A.

EDIT: Also a good tip...when you double the voltage of a heater you quadruple the power requirements.

Don't feel bad, I have a 1300w 65v Toroidal power supply I cant use either.

It's looking like SP-750-24 is the magic power supply to find.

The Meanwell SP-750-24 is $200 :shock:
