Aluminum heat spreader on Onyx

Post by Shizuma »

I'm planning on adding an aluminum heat spreader onto the Onyx heated bed on my Rostock Max, I've seen posts on going straight up aluminum plate as the build surface on the Onyx, but I couldn't find much info on putting a piece of aluminum between the Onyx and the glass build plate to act as a heat spreader.

The question I have is on aluminum thickness, how thick of a piece of aluminum is ideal for evening out bed temps while minimizing the impact on the time getting the build plate up to temp, is 1/16" good? Could I get away with a thinner sheet with that setup, .040", .025", a few pieces of aluminum foil? Do I need a thicker piece than that?

I've been doing well with a .025" spreader. I prewarm the bead and let it settle for about 10 minutes. It does not yield perfect temperature distribution, but does help significantly.

Just be sure to put some kapton tape on the Onyx vias and exposed solder pads, or something like window tint on the back of the heat spreader to prevent electrical shorts.

What, you guys don't have 3/8" thick aluminum?

I have two Rostock Max printers and each has 3/8" Mic-6 aluminum over the Onyx which is running at 24V.
Borasilic glass is over the aluminum and my plans are to place a sheet of PEI Plastic over the glass.
