Kapton - where to buy?

Post by hcdbey »

We are assembling a Rostock MAX V2 in Bamako, Mali, Africa. We have not been able to find Kapton tape.

Please tell me what types of shops in North America or Europe sell Kapton tape. I will try to find a similar shop here in Bamako.

Thanks.

Amazon.com sells it but you can also just use cheap hair spray directly on the glass base, it works and easily cleans off with just water. In my own research and recent reading on the forum the Kapton tape is quite fragile and is easily torn. Have you read http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=7361, if not please do. I'm still using and re-reading it as I setup my Orion and other 3D printers.

Anyone know what industry uses Kapton, maybe a local tradesmen or store might have it by another name or purpose.

Nice! And it looks like a decent site and not just a parked SEO domain like so many of the direct urls.

I need the tape for a couple of steps in the Rostock MAX V2 assembly procedure. There is no equivalent of Amazon here. Everything is brick and mortar or more precisely bamboo and thatch. What sort of retail stores sell Kapton in the developed world. What type of tradespeople use Kapton.

I will try to find a similar sort of store in Africa if one exists or people who might be using Kapton.

Kapton is the common name for it, you might have better luck finding it under "polyimide tape.

Most common layman use will be in electrical motor repair. It is used for high temperature ad high voltage electrical insulation. We it for it's high service temperature range.

The tape is a dark amber or dark orange color. Typically it is thin (0.1mm) almost like cellophane tape but stiffer.

You might try an electrical motor repair shop that services and rewinds large industrial motors.

Best of luck and good hunting.

I have found it locally at an electronics store -- the kind you can buy electronic components like resistors, transistors, switches, wires, etc -- for building electronics, not buying stereos. This is in Canada, mind you, but you could try any stores that sell electronic components.

It's a hard to find over-the-counter item in the USA. Most of the major electronics suppliers that carry it don't operate traditional storefronts anymore. So unless you happen to live near one of the exceptions, it's an order-only item for most of us.

It can be found on Ebay, if that exists in Africa.
Or possibly you can use the US Ebay site...some of the chinese vendors will ship worldwide for free.
