Need help to design this.
I am very new to 3D printing. Just recently finished my Rostock Max V2 assembly. Love this machine and technology. I am a Certified Prosthetist by trade and cant wait to implement 3d printing into my practice. The first project I would like to undertake is printing a cylinder 6" in diameter by 8" in height. Not sure how thick it needs to be but it can't be too flimsy. The cylinder is going to be used to prestretch a compression garment that is one of the first things applied after surgery which controls post surgical edema and helps with pain control. I have no CAD design experience so a simple project like this is very confusing to me at the present time. So I am asking for help to design this. If someone could send me the STL file for this it would be greatly appreciated and helping your fellow mankind at the same time. I have been modifying plastic trash buckets to perform this task presently. When I learn how to use CAD software to design I would eventually like to spruce up the cylinder with the letters COPA printed on the outside to represent my company name. Thanks in advance because I have seen how helpful people are here on the forum.
PS. Forgot to mention the cylinder is open ended both ends.

Re: Need help to design this.
Howdy, cylinders are my specialty and about the only thing I know how to make besides boxes...
I can create one tonight when I get home, unless someone beats me to it.

Beat me to it 4mm is pretty think and should take a beating. That should be a good size if you want to start writing letters on the side as-well.

Soapbox time again...
Check out DesignSpark Mechanical. It's a pretty full featured (free) CAD program with an easy learning curve. I drew and printed my first parts the same night.

Soapbox? DesignSpark? you mean you're not pushing solidworks in some dark alley?
This is more of a quick decorative one, but you get the idea.

Re: Need help to design this.
I also recommend Design Spark.
For this project just define two concentric circles, click on the space between and pull the cylinder to the height that you want. You can then export directly as an .stl file. Takes about that long.
And did I mention that it is free?
Design Spark likely collects information for the NSA and transmits it to them but I was on the list already.

Definitely give DSM a try. It is awesome.

For the application outlined in the root post - would a truncated cone be more suitable ?
Those are easy enough to draw in most drawing tools and if you want to get fancy you can sketch it as a half section and do a rotate extrude.
Perhaps a bottle shape, e.g. this; With reserved logo space.
Ooops, I thought I drew that to stand up, no matter just rotate it 90 degrees in X dimension
BTW, that is about a 10 hour print with MY current settings.
You will need GOOD bed leveling for 6 inch diameter and good first layer adhesion to bed.

Re: Need help to design this.
I wish you the best when you print the cylinder and learning the cad software that was recommended.
Re: Need help to design this.
Something to think about as you try to slice a PIPE is how you want infill - whether or not you want any.
Almost any infill pattern between the inner and outer surfaces of this pipe will vary by position around the circle.
It may matter, or it may not.
In any case as an experiment, or as a learning opportunity, you may want to experiment with the slicer settings for minimum number of perimeters.
If you make it large enough there won't be any room for infill i.e. you will just stack sets of concentric circles.
BTW, I stumbled onto this when trying to make wheel spokes.
Some looked "good and strong" others not so much, depending on their direction.
Option B for me would be to buy schedule 40 PVC pipe, by the foot if necessary - about $10 per foot.
I could paint it, have business name engraved on it, etc for very little money.
Cartoon stickies for use in Children's ward, etc.
A 10 ft length would yield about 15 of the 8 inch lengths.

Re: Need help to design this.
Sure wish there had been a machine to stretch my compression garment after my burn and graft surgeries! I was in compression from my jaw down to my waist, both arms and hands. It was such a fight to get them on I would be totally fatigued.
Re: Need help to design this.
Design spark terms and conditions SEEM to require that I grant to RS some rights to whatever I design.
Not that my little designs are LIKELY to have commercial value, but every so often a patent-able part just MIGHT emerge from someone's gray matter in the wee small hours and it would be a shame to see it grabbed by RS for their profit, or given to the public domain by them.
Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Design Spark Mechanical - Uninstall etc.

The "submit, post or display" part leads me to believe that they're only referring to things that you willingly upload or post on their forums. Several other lines in their license refer to the online community, quoting members, moderating, community rules, citing your sources, etc. Their license agreement is about the website.

More powerful and less user friendly but just as free as Designspark Mechanical is PTC Creo Elements/Direct Modeling Express 6.0 (I know...longest/least useful name ever). Only big negative is that it requires internet connection for license, but I like it more than DSM.
