I have Gene and the copper fill is very tough. It does not fracture like normal PLA, it sort of bends and then fractures. But I had a VERY difficult time breaking it.

Not scientific I know. The good news is, I have 2 friends that work at or for Instron so maybe I can get some testing done!

So. I finally got around to printing this bad boy... Thank you so much to Michael for making it available to us.

Being a lifelong Iowa Hawkeye fan, I had to go black and gold... The gold is a BIT transparent which gave it a really unique pattern look that turned out great.

yes. PLA. im starting to print more PLA. historically ive been very abs focused.

Indeed, very nice. Which gold PLA is that? I have the ColorFAB Bling Bling Gold and it is spectacular. I also have several other varieties but none quite so translucent.

Michael, its actually the gold (standard gold i think) from Inland, sold on micro centers website.. $15 a roll... cant beat that.

I'll have to try that. The translucent PLAs are my favorite, they can really show off curved or other interesting infill styles. I can tell this reel was done with S3D and looks better than anything I was able to get out of it, so great job.

I would really love it if s3d had more infill options. its pretty contraining as is. i love some of the honeycomb looks etc.

I think s3d is amazing, compared to ALL other slicers out there.

I never mentioned it, but this print has had ZERO touch up. not one bit of sanding, or picking.

I've got it down to an art too with KISSlicer. Pop the parts off the PEI and assemble the reel. None of the reels shown here required any work other than assembly:

I really count on infill options for my designs. I'm implementing a post processor that will take a vector map of an infill pattern and then generate gcode for it to splice into a sliced part. It is almost done and will let me do some really creative things.

I am working on an update to the reel. One thing I'm adding as an option is using a short piece of Nylon Zip Tie (the smallest one) for the click check. It works amazingly well and has a lighter click to it. It is also much easer to find and a few even come with the Rostock kit!

Did you ever finish your copperfil reel? or what were those rings you were printing out for? your reels are amazing.. i love the teal and clear one...
that vector map code sounds really neat, you could do just about anything with that

I'm almost done with the copperfill reel. It is a very heavy beast! I decided to print the spool plates and check spindle in carbon fiber PLA to cut weight. I'll post photos when done. I'm a bit concerned about my stainless steel tumbling process with the pillars on the back plate but I'm going to give it a shot.

are you talking about using a rock tumbler for sanding and polishing the copperfill ? those pillars will not survive it IMO

Basically, yes. It is a tumbler. With the rings I tried a vibratory polisher with green fine pyramid media. That worked but took forever. I then put one in my tumbler with 1/8" shot and that polished it up nicely. I had some fragil-ish pieces mixed in to test and they survived. It's worth a shot (no pun intended).

by shot you are just meaning like shot for shotgun shells right? i use drywall nails in my tumbler, but im sick of that because i get a ton of black flecks invading my prints.

Well, it's actually stainless steel media. Some are round (2mm) some are rods and some are ovals - its a fine mix of SS. The stainless does not leave deposits and can be run wet without rusting. But it is $$. I use it for my brass and aluminum reel parts.
