GoPro Session mount for my FPV mini quad

Post by BTP »

I picked up a GoPro Session to put on my FPV mini quad. I looked thru all the normal resources, Thingiverse and alike, but I couldn't find a mount that suited my needs. I wanted something that encases the camera more then everything I was finding. Also if you fly mini quads or any kind of RC aircraft for that matter, you know battery straps and zip ties don't always hold your gear in place in the event of a crash. And if your like me, that happens frequently :D

I designed a mount that affixes to the frame with no zip ties nor straps. It's basically three pieces, the base mount, the camera case, and the back plate. The base mounts on the quad frame and has a male dovetail. It also has a stiff spring plunger that mates with a hole in the camera case. The camera case also has a female dovetail to mate with the base. The back plate secures the camera in the case.

Initially I printed it out of black PLA to get the design down and mating parts working properly. As you can see I had a couple iterations until I was satisfied with the design and fitment. I went thru a couple lens designs until I got one that wasn't visible in frame when recording.

After I was happy with everything I printed the mount out of Proto Pasta HTPLA. This filament is nothing short of amazing in how much more stiff and rugged it is compared to normal PLA. I still have a few changes I'd like to make and the final print will be out of Proto Pasta's HTPLA Carbon Fiber.

I just wanted to share my little project I've been working on to aid my new addiction.... FPV that is.

Very cool! Does the Session still have the stupid fish-eye that seems to be a GoPro hallmark?

They all have the fish eye. However you can change the FOV thru the interface. For FPV, the fish eye provides an extra level of excitement for the viewer.

All cameras have fish eye lenses. That's why the Earth looks round.
