[09Oct15] Rostock MAX v2 3rd Edition Manual!

Post by geneb »

Here's the link for the 3rd Edition of the Rostock MAX v2 assembly & user manual:

http://download.seemecnc.com/rostockmax ... dition.pdf

If you've got the new injection molded carriages, you'll need this version of the manual.

Feedback welcome!

[05Aug15] Misc. fixes and tweaks. Still one or two outstanding issues, but it's getting there!

[07Aug15] This update fixes a number of part description issues that crept in during the insertion of the injection molded carriages. I've also updated the software documentation to cover the current 1.3 release of MatterControl.

[09Oct15] This update includes instructions on installing the new ball & socket arms.

Husband and I built our Rostock MAX v2 this weekend - almost done printing the second fan shroud! Super excited about the printer and print quality so far, but had a few comments about the manual I wanted to share:

I believe the parts list for the new drive carriages needs to be changed. The manual parts section for the carriages(p. 26) and the parts list included in the carriage bag list three 3/8" #4-40 flat head machine screws but no 3/4" #4-40 screws (other than the ones for mounting the RAMBo). This is what was included in the carriage supplies package. The instruction guide for the end stop screws (p. 133) lists using #4-40 3/4" screws for the end stops, but I never used the 3/8" screws for the carriages. Then when I got to the RAMBo mounting, I could only find one 3/4" #4-40 screw of the 4 listed in the parts manual to be used for this purpose. I ended up with three too few 3/4" #4-40 screws and 3 extra 3/8" #4-40 screws. We just bought 1" #4-40 flat head screws for the RAMBo mount, which was the closest we could find in town at 8:00 on a Saturday night and I think they worked out fine, but it took quite a while to figure out why we had too few screws since I'd checked the parts lists quite extensively before starting.

Other smaller notes:

3 of the parts in the manual had different quantities than the hardware part list. The hardware part list always matched the actual number of parts (sometimes with an extra part as seemed typical), and was always enough, but the disconnect was a bit confusing. These parts were 30164 (45 listed on list in hardware pack, 63 listed in manual), 30222 (10 hardware pack, 4 in manual), 30250 (8 hardware pack, 14 in manual)

Also, the MatterControl software is now significantly different than the manual. We were able to figure out what to do, but screenshot updates would be nice and some specific instructions are now in different windows.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll get those issues addressed as soon as I can.

As to MatterControl.... I have no idea why they keep screwing with the user interface, but it's getting old. Taking all of those screen shots takes a LOT of time. :(

Just a FYI ... the Trick Laser CF Arms do work with the new molded plastic v3 carriage.
We now included M3 fender washers with arm sets to better grip the axles on the new plastic carriages.
The stock washers DO work, but barely, the larger washers insure a firm grip.
(the photo shows stock washer on left and the larger washer on right.)

@geneb
We discovered that some of the GT2 belt is thinner than others, possibly allowing belt to slip from the new plastic clamp.
A simple quick fix is to cut a small piece of business card to approximately 6 MM x 15 MM and put it under belt in clamp area.
With the shim the belt will not pull out.
typical card is .010"-.012" thick ( .25 - .3 MM )

I strongly suggest people give their belts a strong pull test to see if shimming is needed.
It all depends how thick belt is, it does vary from supplier to supplier.

It would be a better long-term solution for them to tweak the clip design a bit, although if the clip engages the belt teeth properly, it shouldn't slip.

When I was at SeeMeCNC last Friday talking with Steve, he said they are planning on revising the injection mold to accommodate the thinner build.
