Dial-up Music (HELP)

Post by Tincho85 »

I need help please, a couple of things have been going on.
Will try my best to keep it as concise as possible.

I posted it first in another topic, but better make a new thread.

1) When I turn on the printer the bed temperature starts rising by itself.
The bed is fed by a 24v PSU and a SSR, the board by a 12v PC PSU.

* It's a 100a Fotek.
* It' has never gotten hot when operative.
* No signs of a burnt.
* There is no light in the SSR.

How can I tell if the SSR is failing?
To “fix” that, I removed the 24v PSU from the equation and connected the bed directly to the Rambo board.

All good, the temperature no longer keeps rising.

Now, this happens:
https://youtu.be/iMJJ8_veE9U
2) When the bed and hotend is heating it makes a weird sound.

* The music begins when it's regulating the temperature.
* I don't know where the sound comes from, I hear it from the Rambo but not really sure.
* After a few minutes the printer turns off by itself.
* I have his machine since 2013 and never heard this before.

I don't know what to do…
Will try with a different PSU and see how it goes.

I have heard the same "music" once the bed gets to temp and starts regulating the temperature. This has happened since update dating the firmware to the most recent from seemecnc. It makes no sense to me.

I did update the firmware like 3 weeks ago, but never heard this till yesterday when the issues started.
Something else must be going on.

(Please bear with me, I'm having a hard time to explain myself properly in english)

Installed a new 12v 30a Switching power supply. The sound is coming from PSU and not from the Rambo board.
The PSU behaves strange when trying to stabilize the temperature. It doesn't seem normal.
The psu fan changes it's speed drastically in seconds. My guess is that the fan speed fluctuating is normal. Because under load there is more draw of current.
Please correct me if wrong.

At least the printer is not shutting down by itself now.

FYI the voltage is set to 12.15vDC and it's rock solid.
It does not drop at all when bed, heater and motor are running.

I'm starting a print right now, I let you guys know if the printer shuts down.

Regarding the SSR, I'm not using it nor the 24v PSU.
I will be buying an Auber MGR-1DD80D100 as per mhackney recommendation.

Alright, 3h and still printing. The "new" sound is still there and it's driving me nuts.
If it's normal, then why did it start just now? The firmware update was done weeks ago.

Perhaps a new kind of mind control... that only the most intelligent can hear.

Hi KAS, less robotic, but yes, very similar.
Here, downloaded Audacity and removed some environment noise.

As far as what's going on with my printer, my guess is:

The SSR is broken, so that's the cause of the self-heating bed when turning the machine on. After that, I connected the bed directly to the old 600w PC PSU, but this one was unable to deliver the power to both bed and hotend. Therefore, as a precaution measure, it turned off. (weird thing, before doing the 24v upgrade this PSU worked fine, do they loose power overtime? It was installed like 2 years ago)

Regarding the annoying sound, it wasn't present with the SSR+24v PSU but yes when I connected the bed to the old PSU and to the new 12v 30a PSU. You can barely hear it when just the hotend is regulating its temperature, but it's much more loud when the bed is working.
So I'm guessing it was always there, but the 24v PSU just didn't make it loud enough for me to hear it.

Printer is working fine but this sound is unbearable.
Any feedback is appreciated.

So-called Fotek DC-DC SSRs are mostly fakes. They have a about 2V voltage drop, which means that a substantial fraction of the power intended for the bed gets dissipated in the SSR. So the SSR gets very hot and will fail unless you cool it very well.

Get a better SSR. See https://duet3d.com/wiki/Connecting_a_bed_heater for recommendations. Although that page is written to support Duet electronics, the SSR recommendations apply to any electronics.

Much written about this and David is absolutely correct about fake Fosteks. I had a major problem with one that I bought from Mouser so should not have been fake. You can read about it in my build thread or in my blog post that describes the issue and recommends a very good affordable SSR: http://sublimelayers.blogspot.com/2016/ ... eated.html

Fotek does make a 25A DC-DC SSR so yours probably was genuine. However, I have never found a data sheet for so-called 40A or greater Fotek SSRs, so I suspect they are all fakes. The Fotek SSR-25DD does have a high voltage drop, so it is equally unsuitable. The Auber Instruments one that you list on your blog is the less expensive of two DC-DC SSRs that I list on the Duet support page I linked to.

Just to be clear, for AC mains bed heaters the Fotek DC-AC SSRs are fine.

I've been really happy with the Auber Instruments SSR. I have them on all 8 of my printers. The Rostock Max has a 24VDC powered Onyx and the SSR never even gets warm to the touch with no heatsink. I do have it on a heatsink though just for extra cooling "just in case". I've been using Auber Instruments SSRs for years in heating ovens for my bamboo fly rod making and other hobbies. They've always been reliable and affordable.
