Rostock Max V2 noise reduction

Post by Johncoffee »

Since I have my Rostock Max V2, I was annoyed by it's noise during printing. A overnight print job was difficult - my wife complained about the noise. :(

Now I have installed some motor vibration dampers I've got from here:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item-img/NEMA ... 7.2.IlAlEJ

The result is marvellous - the noise is much reduced. Now the main noise is comes from the extruder motor assembly. There it is difficult to install the above shown damper due to the lack of screw holes.

Question: Has anybody done any successful done any noise damping of the extruder? Maybe some rubber or similar between the mounting plates?

Thanks for any hint.

You could try a cork gasket made for Nema 17 motors. Easy to find on ebay.

Also available from Brian, if you're placing a TrickLaser order in the near future.

I recently installed a flying extruder. When I was first calibrating the esteps for it, I thought it wasn't getting the signal because it was so quiet. Once I saw that filament was moving, I knew I had made the right choice in moving to a flying configuration. I never realized how much quieter it would be.

Because I enclosed my printer, I opted to move the extruder to the outside of the printer (I may rethink this later and go with a flying extruder if I can be convinced that a heated chamber won't be a problem for the stepper)

When I moved it outside the printer, I positioned it on a rail with rubber that isolates the motor from the main body of the printer. It is dramatically quieter. The stock mounting of the extruder is very very noisy, and could be improved in many ways.

I used the cork isolators from trick laser and with my somewhat impaired high frequency hearing they do the trick for me... don't squish them too much though reduce their thickness by about 1/3 when you tighten the mounts for best effect.

I bought the stepper isolators but I never installed them because I was worried about how it would affect the belt alignment. I'm debating if it's worth the time to install them now... I'd like a quieter machine but don't want to tear a working printer apart.

Thanks to all for your answers.
Qdeathstar: For me definitely worth the time when looking at the result. It appears that the hot end moves much smoother over the printed part, it literally flies since there is really almost zero noise. I get the impression that printing result is better too - it really appears even smoother than before. But this might be different for different parts.
My lady complained sometimes - she could hear it even when my room door was closed and she was in another room. Now she can barley tell it's printing..

There's no belt alignment issue because you move the gear to offset the thickness of the damper.

I used Sorbothane sheet on the mount for the extruder. Can't hear it over the fans. See here: http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php ... 293#p90669

Nope - nothing at all. I was concerned about this too, but the gear rotates accurate on the "shorter" motor axle. Print outs come out well - or even better. At least they are being printed so quiet that it makes me feel that the hot end moves with less vibrations. Not sure about this fact but as mentioned - it appears to me. Definitely worth trying.
Now I still struggle with the extruder motor: I've placed some rubber pads between the extruder motor ass. and the vertical laminate plate that comes down from top. The motor opening seems to be the problem as it is very accurate and the motor touches the laminate on it's side. I'll increase the motor cut-out now on the vertical laminate plate and hope to have a improvement.
I somehow hesitate to do a "flying struder" - as the vertikal lifts x and y need to carry the extruder weight as well with some sort of rubber strings. Looks kind of funky to me...

I ordered the NEMA 17 dampers from MatterHackers and my printer is very quiet. You can't hear it in the next room. Enclosures also work to keep down noise. And you can put rubber under the printer to keep vibrations from being transmitted into the table.

You can hear on my video: https://youtu.be/G3tZd2A_2p0
