Rostock v2 - Bowden Extruder Upgrade

Post by jebeddo »

I am looking to upgrade the extruder setup on my v2.
I am talking about the spring tensioned knurled gear portion of the extruder.
The stepper motor is all fine.

I keep having issues with filament getting stuck, and I never really liked the setup anyway.
The issues always occur when I'm not watching the machine, so I don't know whats happening.
But too many failed prints and I'm ready to replace things.

Does anyone have any upgrades known to work well?

I found some things I think might work, the this.

Just figured I'd ask you folks before purchasing.
Thanks all!

Every time I come back to the machine and it's failed, it just gummed up and spinning on the wheel.
I then will check that i can freely and gently pull additional filament off the spool, to make sure I dont have an issues there.
I then cut the filament right above the stepper motor, because I now know that the from the spool to there is not a problem.
I heat up the hot end to the appropriate temp (that I normally print at) and make sure that i can gently and freely pull the filament back out from the hot end, up to the stepper.

All 4 times (2 times on ABS, 2 times on PLA) the filament has been easily and gently able to be pulled.
So I am guessing that it's something to do with a old wheel being gummed up.

And for the $10 that I see a new wheel costing, I am not going to spend any time cleaning it.
I am failing too many large prints to care about $10 at this point.
And If a whole new upgrade is $10.......i might as well just upgrade the whole setup is my thought.

This is my original spurred wheel from 6 years ago, so no love lost there.

If the hobbed gear is grinding filament away, it's because you've got a clog in your hot end or you're feeding filament too fast for the temperature you're running. Cleaning out plastic from the gear is trivial. Get a dental pick and spend five minutes cleaning it.
