I now own a mini CNC router and a 3D printer
When Steve was routing Mona Lisa with a Dremel mounted to his printer, I wanted one. Well now I can route and print, though not at the same time. Here are some photos.

It's called DYI so if you want one you'll need to build you one. You can't afford me took 2 days to build the adapter.
Here are a couple of shots of the first try. A 20mm pocket 2mm deep. Only miked out to 19.96mm

Very cool Dave. Is that a Foredam hand piece?

No it is an old style Dremel flex drive.

Dave,
That is very nice. Are you getting any flex when you machine harder materials?

I have not routed any thing other than this PVC foam board. I have more photos in the camera from today. Will UL them later.

Here is a shot of the first real CNC router cut I have made. Pilot house sides for a model tow boat. Running a 2mm end mill at 35,000 RPN 16" per min feed rate. Took just shy of 2.5 minutes to cut. Material is 3mm PVC foam board

The foam is really milling well. Are you making forms for aluminum or epoxy \ Acrylic casting?

When I get the heated bed up and running I will be printing molds for wax patterns used for lost wax investment casting.

That sounds interesting as well are you going to be casting precious metals?

No I will only have Alu and bronze cast to build these Zdrives for model tugs.

Yes It is a Kaplan style 73mm dia X 50mm pitch and will be installed in the Zdrive. Drive will fit in 1/24 scale boats easy and big 1/32 scale boats.

Re: I now own a mini CNC router and a 3D printer
Here are the 4 linear bearing blocks for the Z axis on the H-1 Tank. Will be cutting them apart and adding some taped holes on the edges just in case. One thing I have discovered is because of the increase in weight of the X axis and extruder I an loosing steps if I rapid up at to high a feed rate. limited to about 16 IPM.
I think that I will be designing a counter weight system so the lear screws do not have to lift all of the weight.

Re: I now own a mini CNC router and a 3D printer
Well I have the Z axis linear bearing mod complete. Before the mod when I was routing the PVC foam board the best I could get was 16" per min feed rate. The Z axis was loosing steps when it rapid up for a holding tab. After completing the mod I route one more test route. 40" per min no lost steps. the job finished in 1 minute. Here are some shots of the Z axis bearings.

That's very cool, looks like the tank is complete.
I think I counted about 12 of the original H-1 plastic parts
.
Nice work Dave!

Re: I now own a mini CNC router and a 3D printer
My next challenge is to design and build a extruder that uses resin pellets just like Steve and Johns injection molding machines. It will have three temp zones. Cold, warm where the pellets start to soften and hot where the pellets are at extrusion temp exiting the nozzle. It will have to be all metal

Re: I now own a mini CNC router and a 3D printer
How will you keep air out of the mix with the pellets, compress them with a screw in the middle zone?
Most injection molders I have worked on in the past (Van Dorn's and Cincinatti's) have a "shot" of plastic molten ready to inject before it gets to the nozzle.
Your Z mod looks fantastic! and I am anxiously waiting to see what you come up with for the "granule" type extruder

Have a look at this guy's design.

You may get some inspiration as to how you can build a pellets to printing extruder.

Re: I now own a mini CNC router and a 3D printer
I think his energy should of gone to printing from pellets rather than making filament. Sure seems slow, at the rate he was getting filament out you would spend hours and hours making filament.
